This is an advanced Standard Modern Chinese language course, designed for students who have successfully completed Advanced Modern Chinese A , or have achieved the equivalence approved to enroll by placement test.
The course places special emphasis on reading comprehension of texts on issues concerning contemporary China. It will be taught mainly in Chinese. It relies heavily on students' self-study and pre-class preparation. Students will be required to give oral presentations in Chinese, engage in real-issue debates and conduct real time interviews as part of the course assessment. They will also write a research-based essay in Chinese by utilizing primary sources on an approved self-chosen topic. The lectures will focus on facilitating students' learning and oral development. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Demonstrate advanced language skills in reading, writing, literary analysis and debate in Chinese and an understanding of some of the features of modern and contemporary Chinese literature and culture.
2. Communicate confidently in writing and speaking, and in groups, on topics drawn from a variety of reading materials from representative works of Chinese literature and culture.
3. Demonstrate appropriate listening, speech-making and presentation skills, to present academic arguments fluently and clearly.
4. Demonstrate information gathering skills and the ability to compose academic essays on Chinese literature.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website Students may choose not to submit assessment items through Turnitin. In this instance you will be required to submit, alongside the assessment item itself, hard copies of all references included in the assessment item.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Participation

1. Class participation: completion of the weekly readings, preparation for and contribution to class discussion.
2. Group work: Initiative, cooperation and contribution throughout the research project.
3. Group meetings with lecturer: Extent of preparation, contribution and engagement.
4. In the week of the meeting, each group must upload at least 1 project-related Chinese language article by 12 noon on Monday, This will serve as the discussion article. Students should have read the article prior to the meeting.
5. Late arrival (by 10 minutes) and early departure (by 10 minutes) will count as absence.

10-15 minutes at the beginning of the lecture or pre-lecture. No make-up tests.

The test will cover language points and understanding of the readings the previous week as well as the readings in the current week.

Weekly reading reflections

Handwritten in Chinese on the reading of the week. Length: 2 pages using the Chinese essay paper (on Wattle), or 1 page using line paper. Upload it on Wattle by 12noon on Monday.

Research project. Step 1. Project proposal: written and oral presentation

• The project is aimed at further developing reading, writing and oral presentation skills in Chinese, as well as enhancing critical and balanced views and nuanced analytical skills.
• Present it as a group in class and submit after the presentation.
• The written proposal should be around 2 pages (excluding references), typed, double spacing, font 12.
• The assessment will be at the group level unless there is apparent imbalance of contribution and quality of presentation.

Research project. Step 2. Poster and oral presentation

Poster: A succinct summary display of the research being conducted, including the results and key references.

Oral presentation: Each research group presents the project using the poster as an aid. The presentation is assessed at the individual level.

Research project. Step 3. Research project paper

This is an individual work; each student is to write up the research paper on his/her own.

Length: 4-5 typed pages in Chinese, excluding references. Format: font 12, default margin, double spacing, APA or Harvard referencing style.

NOTE: A self-reflectionmust be accompany the research paper. The self-reflection should outline in detail your contribution and the contribution of your team members at each stage of the project. You may raise issues and concerns. Deduction of marks will be made if there is no self-assessment.

Online Submission

Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

No submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date will be permitted. If an assessment task is not submitted by the due date, a mark of 0 will be awarded.

Referencing Requirements

Accepted academic practice for referencing sources that you use in presentations can be found via the links on the Wattle site, under the file named “ANU and College Policies, Program Information, Student Support Services and Assessment”. Alternatively, you can seek help through the Students Learning Development website.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information. In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service — including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy. If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
