This course introduces the key concepts of modern real analysis. The philosophy of this course is that modern analysis plays a fundamental role in mathematics itself and in applications to areas such as physics, computer science, economics and engineering.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Elementary set theory
  • Metric spaces
  • Uniform convergence
  • Continuity
  • The contraction mapping principle
  • Integral equations
  • Differential equations
  • Topological spaces

Note: Graduate students attend joint classes with undergraduates. This course will have shared lectures with MATH2320 and MATH 3116.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Explain the fundamental concepts of real analysis and their role in modern mathematics and applied contexts
  2. Demonstrate accurate and efficient use of real analysis techniques
  3. Demonstrate capacity for mathematical reasoning through analyzing, proving and explaining concepts from real analysis
  4. Apply problem-solving using real analysis techniques applied to diverse situations in physics, engineering and other mathematical contexts
  5. Ability to use deep knowledge and understanding of advanced real analysis to formulate responses to complex concrete and abstract problems.

Workload

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130-150 hours throughout the semester including:

  • Face-to face component which will consist of 12 x 4 hours of lectures per semester (48 hours) and 10 hours of workshops throughout the semester.
  • Approximately 70-90 hours of self-study which will include preparation for lectures, workshops, assignments and exams.
