This course will provide students with an overview of key concepts, research, and clinical practice in Health Psychology and the emerging area of Lifestyle Medicine. The focus will be on the management. and treatment of common chronic conditions including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, sleep disturbance, chronic pain, and disease comorbidity. The course will also address the relationship of lifestyle factors to health and wellbeing and psychological approaches to modifying these factors, including behavioural, social and environmental factors.

  1. Understand the effects of chronic illness and changes in a person’s health status on their emotions,thinking and behaviour;
  2. Consider and understand how a person’s health can be affected by their behavior, given certain social factors, environments, and biological factors;
  3. Recognize the factors that are likely to underpin positive and negative changes in health-related behavior,and the promotion of healthy behavior;
  4. Utilise the framework for acquiring accurate medical information to assist students in finding out more about particular medical illnesses and conditions, as required;
  5. Access appropriate and accurate online psychological resources including the resources provided via Medline, PsycInfo, and the ANU library catalogues; and,
  6. Determine the best evidence-based management of common psychological problems (e.g. anxiety,depression, fear of cancer recurrence) and related problems (e.g. sleep disturbance, obesity) in clients, and how the treatment of the psychological comorbidities may differ from the treatment of uncomplicated psychological conditions.

Workload

Weekly contact hours will comprise 3 hours of face-to-face activities including lectures and/or workshops. The workload is expected to be 130 hours, including study time, spread over the semester or session.

Requisite and Incompatibility

In order to enrol in this course you need to be active in the Master of Professional Psychology.

You will need to contact the Research School of Psychology to request a permission code to enrol in this course.

Assumed Knowledge

PSYC3020 or an undergraduate psychology knowledge of psychological aspects of lifestyle and physical health; knowledge and skill in psychological assessment and interventions from first year and first semester in the second year of this course.
