This course will feature advanced topics related to active areas of photonics research at the ANU. Each year will include a selection from laser physics, quantum optics, quantum cryptographic communications, highresolution metrology in the space sciences, nonlinear optics, photonic materials, modern imaging optical systems and astrophotonics.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Apply theoretical and practical foundations of photonics knowledge in an advanced topic;
- Conduct background research by reading and understanding current technical literature;
- Analyse cutting edge photonic systems;
- Organise the technical ideas behind cutting edge photonic systems;
- Observe critically and participate in an advanced experimental project in a research laboratory.

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the semester including:
- Face-to face component which may consist of 3 hour per week
- Approximately 96 hours of self-study which will include preparation for lectures, presentations and other assessment tasks (average 7 hours per week .

Requisite and Incompatibility
Prescribed TextsLecture notes and select references relevant to topic, as well as research articles from technical journals.
Assumed Knowledge12 units of university level mathematics for physicists and engineers; 12 units of first year university advanced level physics. Students must be familiar with the basic theory of optics,including familiarity with Maxwell’s equations and wave concepts.
