This is an intermediate level Chinese language course, following on from Modern Chinese 3.  This course is designed to cover the remaining essential grammatical points of Standard Modern Chinese language before moving on to a higher-intermediate level which will focus on the written style.  This course will help students to raise students' linguistic competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking in Standard modern Chinese. It aims at laying a solid foundation for more advanced Chinese language study
In addition to the coverage of the textbook, the course will also utilize other textual and audio / visual materials so that students can learn more about aspects of Chinese culture, history, and society.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Apply the remaining essential grammatical structures of Modern Chinese with fluency.
2. Use an active vocabulary of about 2,500 items.
3. Recognise and use phrase and sentence structures to discuss and write extended passages on a wide range of non-technical topics, and to read short authentic non-technical texts, with a precise awareness of how the features of written Chinese differ from their oral equivalents.
4. Communicate with a degree of spontaneity and confidence on such topics as women's issues and education in China.
5. Display an understanding of aspects of Chinese culture and society, such as Chinese ways of expressing relationships and love.

This is a co-taught course. Any cap on enrollments in one course applies to both courses combined.

On successful completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to engage at an Intermediate level of Standard Modern Chinese.

Students with native speaker proficiency (may include cognate languages and dialects) must review the placement test site and contact the CAP Student Center for appropriate enrollment advice. Students with previous “language experience or exposure” are required to take a language placement test to ensure enrollment at the most appropriate level.

Relevant past experience includes:

-      Previous study of the language (both formal and informal, for example but not limited to, at school, or, home, or through online activities, etc.)

-      Being exposed to the language in childhood via a family member or friend

-      Travel or living in a country where the language is spoken

-      The language being spoken in your home (even if you do not speak it yourself)

Students who are not sure if they need to take a placement test should seek advice from the course or language convener. Students who intentionally misrepresent their language proficiency level may be investigated under the Academic Misconduct Rule 2015 as having failed to comply with assessment directions and having sought unfair advantage. This may results in a penalty such as reduced grades or failure of the course.

Students are not permitted to enroll in a language course below one that they have already successfully completed, except with permission of the language and/or course convener.

Requisites & incompatibilities

To enroll in this course you must have successfully completed CHIN2014 or have been permitted entry based on the results of the Chinese language placement test. Incompatible with CHIN6521.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. In this instance you will be required to submit, alongside the assessment item itself, hard copies of all references included in the assessment item.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Assessment Task 1

Lecture & tutorial participation 5%

Date: All language classes and tutorials throughout the semester.

Description: Engaging in all activities in lectures and tutorials.

Marking Criteria: Attending the language classes and tutorials; Actively participating in the classroom activities which require adequate preparation beforehand.

Assessment Task 2

Weekly homework 20% (Listening 10%, written 10% )

Date: Weekly throughout the semester.

Description:

1. There are 11 take-home weekly assignment from which students are required to submit 10 of them in order to get the full marks. The homework is to enhance students’ understanding and learning the content covered each week. They focus on what is taught in the lectures and cover the key grammatical points of each lesson.

2. It include Listening & Written tasks in the workbook both of which must be completed. The Written part has to be handwritten which is to be scanned and submitted on Wattle. Typewritten copy is not accepted.

Submission:

The listening tasks are to be performed on Wattle. The due dates are the following Mondays at 12:00 before a new lecture starts.

A firm deadline for homework will be observed. Strictly no late submission will be accepted: Any late submission automatically receives 0 marks. For exceptional cases which require extension, the students must contact (email) the course coordinator before the assignment deadline with valid reasons (e.g., urgent health issue with medical certificate provided).

* Turnitin is NOT used for this course as it cannot properly read handwritten submissions.

Feedback: The written feedback will be given to students within two weeks of submission.

Assessment Task 3

Mid-semester written test 20%

Date: Week 7

Description:

The tests will be conducted on Wattle via Zoom on Monday of Week 7. It will focus on students’ grammatical competence, reading and writing skills.

Assessment Task 4

Listening tests 15%

Date: Week 6, on Friday at tutorial time.

Description: The listening tests will be conducted via Zoom with a focus on students’ listening skills. Format will be advised close to the time.

Assessment Task 5

Oral tests 20%

Date: Week 11; on Thursday at tutorial time.

Description: The oral test will be group-based oral performance, followed by spontaneous response to questions. The test will be conducted via Zoom. It aims to assess students’ speaking skills, i.e., pronunciation/tones, mastering of the vocabulary/grammar learnt, response competency, etc.

Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

No submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date will be permitted. If an assessment task is not submitted by the due date, a mark of 0 will be awarded. OR Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension are penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information. In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service — including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
