Public Health disasters, catastrophes and recovery (MEDI8116)

This course is designed to explore the principles, practices and tools that public health planners use to deal with critical events both in country and in the form of international intervention.  Some of the issues that are covered in this course include role of national government, NGOs, WHO and UN Agencies in the surveillance and preparedness to counter national and international public health threats.  Students will critically examine past events and current plans and will be expected to challenge past priorities and practices.

• explore the concepts of emergency preparedness in protecting people from national and international threats. (LO1)

 

• critically discuss within a framework  past threats and existing plans to better prepare, plan and deliver successful interventions under duress. (LO2)

 

•  critically review national and international response to past events and our public health preparedness to asymmetric threats such as chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats. (LO3)

Other Information

The course will consist of weekly formal sessions (50% lecture and 50% interactive tutorials) and student activities.

The course will be delivered in face-to-face and online mode.

Indicative Assessment

20% - 500-750 word take home exam LO1

60% - 3000 word essay LO1, LO2, LO3

20% - 500-750 word critical review of emergency preparedness LO3

Workload

The workload will be three contact hours per week comprising a combination of lectures and tutorials with the expectation of a further seven hours of independent study and directed reading.

students participating online will be supported by recorded lectures, an online forum and structured lecture material and directed reading.  Skype tutorials will also be made available based on the needs of individual students.
