The course is designed to prepare international students for first year undergraduate study. This course aims to develop students' skills in aural and written communication modes, digital literacy and quantitative research. The objectives of this course are to develop students’ conceptual understanding of fundamental research principles and approaches in quantitative research, and introduce specific skills used in quantitative research such as hypothesis testing, primary data collection and descriptive analysis. Students will be expected to participate in a series of class lectures and tutorial-style classes, to engage in both independent learning and group work and to complete all assessment tasks in a timely manner. Students will be expected to follow academic honesty and citation conventions (APA).

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:1. Describe and apply key principles and approaches used in proposing and conducting quantitative research
2. work as part of a team to conduct a simple quantitative investigation using either archived (e.g., ABS census), observation, experimental or online survey (Likert scale) data collection;
3. Collect, organize, synthesize and analyze quantitative research data using simple descriptive group analysis;
4. Evaluate a quantitative research study in terms of its approach and limitations;
5. Communicate research rationale and findings using well-structured and logical arguments;
6. Present research findings in report form using a suitable format.
