This course will introduce students to international trade and investment law and the intellectual property (IP) system, while critically exploring the role of power and politics in shaping its development. Particular attention will be paid to the impact trade, investment, and IP agreements have had on regulation and governance at both the domestic and global levels; and what impact international regulatory and governance frameworks have had on these agreements. Students will explore contemporary issues in trade, investment, and IP policy and the role of civil society resistance. This course will also have students explore the opportunities and challenges of creating good governance and intersectoral and interdisciplinary engagement in trade, investment, and IP, and how to move towards policy coherence with public regulatory policy goals. Students will receive the opportunity to engage with concepts and applied debates through in class activities, and examine and synthesise relevant issues through class presentations and a final essay.

Indicative Assessment
- In-class participation and electronic submission of two questions for each session a day prior to class (10%)
- Leading one in-class discussion based on selected readings on topics in trade, investment and IP (10%)
- Commentary on a regulatory challenge from the trade, investment and IP system - 1000 words (20%)
- Research and writing plan and outline for major essay - 1000 words (20%)
- Major essay on the use of regulatory and governance scholarship to analyse trade, investment, and IP systems - 3000 words (40%)
