This major is only available to students undertaking the Bachelor of Visual Arts.
The Painting major equips students to develop their ideas visually through studio research, discussion and reflection, drawing on art history, theory and an understanding of contemporary practice. We encourage students to be resourceful, inventive and imaginative, exploring the expressive potential of materials and processes. Students develop a capacity to reflect critically and communicate their ideas in studio discussions, as a strong grounding for professional practice. Students benefit from a Visiting Artists program which incorporates the expertise of artists into teaching and learning. With active academic staff and excellent technical facilities, the Painting workshop provides an excellent study environment.
School of Art & Design studio courses have a limited enrolment capacity. Students are advised to enrol as early as possible to maximise the opportunity of securing a place.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an understanding and application of the practices, languages, forms, materials, technologies and techniques in painting;
- realise independent creative projects through forms of creative expression;
- develop and evaluate concepts and process by thinking creatively, critically and reflectively;
- work independently and collaboratively in a workshop environment in response to project demands; and
- apply workplace health and safety (WHS) regulations and principles within a workshop environment.

This major requires the completion of 48 units from the following lists, which must include:
A maximum of 12 units of courses at 1000 level
A minimum of 12 units of courses at 3000 level
24 units from the completion of the following compulsory courses:
ARTV1501 - Painting: Introducing Painting (6 units)
ARTV1502 - Painting: Composition & Space (6 units)
ARTV3033 - Creative Research Practice: Developing an Independent Work Proposal (6 units)
ARTV3034 - Creative Research Practice: Extending and Consolidating an Independent Work Proposal (6 units)
A minimum of 12 units must come from completion of intermediate studio courses from the following list:
ARTV2506 - Painting: Approaches to Abstraction (6 units)
ARTV2507 - Painting: Painting in the Photo Digital Age (6 units)
ARTV2508 - Painting: Taking Your Own Direction (6 units)
ARTV2509 - Painting: Approaches to Composition and Colour (6 units)
A maximum of 12 units may come from completion of advanced studio courses from the following list:
ARTV3507 - Painting: Open to Influence Studio Research (6 units)
ARTV3508 - Painting: Materiality and Meaning (6 units)
ARTV3510 - Painting: Critical Analysis and Reflection in the Studio (6 units)
