The Advanced French Studies minor is for students who already have a high level of competence in French. It aims to deepen students’ knowledge and critical understanding of French and Francophone cultures and societies, whilst continuing to improve their fluency in reading and listening comprehension as well as oral and written expression. Through the study of courses in a broad range of areas such as literature, cinema and the history of ideas, as well as thematic courses targeting specific aspects of history, social movements and politics in France and the wider Francophone world, students will improve their linguistic and cultural knowledge as well as their skills in critical thinking, academic writing and oral presentation in French.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. communicate proficiently and confidently in French;
  2. identify the structure and uses of French;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the societies and cultures of France and the Francophone world, and their socio-historical contexts;
  4. construct a schema of the connections between France and its geographical, social and cultural origins; and
