Asian and Pacific Anthropology is paramount to understanding the seismic transformations in the region and globally. The Asia-Pacific region brings fresh insights to anthropological inquiry, illuminating processes of social transformation, technological innovation, governance and religious traditions. This minor covers key debates that are central to the changing social and cultural landscapes of Asia and the Pacific with a specialist focus on social ideologies, political institutions and everyday practices. It brings to life the ongoing struggles of the region with regards to modernity and exclusion, environmental change, development, technology, and the enduring cultural traditions across Asia and the Pacific.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand and evaluate historical and current events and developments that have shaped relationships between people, places and cultures of the Asia Pacific
  2. Identify and critique contemporary cultural practices mediated by local and global forces, such as migration patterns, religious systems, mass media, environmental traditions and development discourse,
  3. Analyse current debates relating to ethnographic methods, including both fieldwork and ethnographic writing in the context of colonial and postcolonial states,
  4. Understand the processes and disciplinary approaches through which current knowledge about Asia Pacific ethnology has developed, along with wider processes of development, globalization and modernization in the Asia/Pacific in a comparative perspective.

Requirements

This minor requires the completion of 24 units, which must include:
