The Art History and Theory minor locates the study of art in a range of historical, social, cultural and political contexts. Building on a foundation of art history’s principal themes students have the opportunity to focus on a variety of subjects including Australian, Asian and International art, historic and contemporary. The minor also offers a range of courses focussing on digital media, craft and design. Students develop the analytical skills necessary for critically evaluating images and objects and the ability to communicate effectively about works in different media to specialist audiences using professional conventions.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify key artistic movements and describe their development, evolution and interrelationships.
  2. Recognise and reflect on the practices, languages, forms, materials, technologies and techniques used throughout history in the making of art.
  3. Analyse the social, cultural, ethical context of historic and contemporary art.
  4. Interpret, communicate and present ideas, problems and arguments about art in modes suited to a range of audiences.
