This course has been adjusted for remote participants in Sem 1, 2021, however attendance at on-campus activities is preferable.
The focus of this course is on the synthesis, structure and bonding, properties and reactivity of main group organometallics (including Grignard reagents, organolithium reagents, organophosphorus compounds, etc), organotransition metal chemistry, cluster chemistry, and organo-lanthanoid and -actinoid chemistry. The laboratory component of the course will aim to develop skills in the handling of air-sensitive compounds using the Schlenk technique and the purification of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Explain and rationalize the synthesis, structure, bonding, properties and reactivity of main group, transition metal, lanthanoid, and actinoid organyls.
- Work to a professional level in a chemical synthesis laboratory demonstrating effective laboratory safety and etiquette, especially in the areas of handling of air sensitive reagents, chromatographic techniques and spectroscopic characterization.
- Demonstrate effective report writing, experimental design and data analysis.

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the semester including:
- Face-to face component which may consist of 3 x 1 hour lectures per week plus approximately 32 hours of laboratory throughout the semester.
- Approximately 62 hours of self-study which will include preparation for lectures and other assessment tasks.

Assumed KnowledgeSynthetic laboratory based skills at the second year chemistry level and a background in organic / inorganic / organometallic chemistry at the second year level.
