The aim of this course is to prepare students for undertaking their HDR thesis. All students will learn appropriate methodology as required for research in diplomacy in small reading groups and seminars facilitated by academics at the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy (APCD). In addition, each student will participate in one-to-one discussions with APCD academics on readings selected jointly by the academic and student that will form a foundation for a future thesis. The emphasis will be on active interaction between the student group and with the academics.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Display an advanced awareness of research methodologies for the study of diplomacy;
  2. Apply their knowledge of research methods and techniques to the development of a thesis proposal;
  3. Critically analyze the reliability of a variety of information sources;
  4. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the literature relevant to the preparation of their thesis; and
  5. Understand how to develop a rigorous methodology to undertake their thesis.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. To enrol in this course you must be currently enrolled in the HDR programs at the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy or in other units of the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs.
