The thesis is a major piece of guided independent research on a topic agreed between the student and their supervisor. Students design and implement a project to answer their research question, to place the answer in the context of an intellectual tradition, and to communicate it clearly to others. The work must show evidence of wide reading and understanding, of critical analysis and/or appropriate use of advanced research methods, and be at a higher level of development than the major research project.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Pose a significant research question relating to Environmental Management and Development;
  2. Investigate this question creatively, critically, ethically, and independently, including through sophisticated use of appropriate theory and methodology as appropriate to Environmental Management and Development, and place these investigations in the context of the relevant intellectual tradition; and
  3. Communicate their research and its findings through an appropriate medium

Indicative Assessment

  1. The assessment items will comprise a research thesis of 20,000 words (exclusive of footnotes, maps, references and appendices) on an approved topic relating to environment and development, showing evidence of extensive reading, critical engagement with advanced conceptual approaches, critical analysis and/or appropriate use of highly developed research methods. There is a penalty of 10% for exceeding this word limit. (100) [LO 1,2,3]
