SELT Survey Results

This course focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to understand the processes and environments in which magmatic and metamorphic rocks form, including the following topics: the relations between crystallisation and deformation in metamorphic rocks and their link to evolution of orogens; reconstruction of plate tectonic processes from detailed investigation at a grain scale; construction and detailed interpretation of phase diagrams; the role of fluid phases and the use of mineralogy, trace elements, and radiogenic and stable isotopes to constrain magmatic and metamorphic processes.

Laboratory: Characterisation and interpretation of microstructures in igneous and metamorphic rocks using the optical microscope, numerical modelling of trace element fractionation, construction and interpretation of phase diagrams, and fieldwork.

Note: Graduate students attend joint classes with undergraduates but are assessed separately. Separate, more advanced laboratory work will be assigned to Masters students.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Recognise key metamorphic and magmatic minerals in hand specimens and thin sections. Classify magmatic and metamorphic rocks based on their mineralogy.
  2. Understand conditions of rock formation derived from textural and compositional information.
  3. Link rock forming processes to tectonic environments.
  4. Construct phase diagrams and use them to interpret rock textures and rock forming processes.
  5. Interpret and evaluate relevant information from the scientific literature.
  6. Perform calculations to model the behaviour of trace and major elements, and interpret the results.
  7. Understand igneous and metamorphic processes and explain these to their peers.

Research-Led Teaching

Lectures and practicals will contain examples from recent and classic research papers.

Field Trips

There will be a weekend (Sat - Sun, 17 - 18 April) trip to Cooma to examine the metamorphic and igneous sequences in the region. Students who are unable to participate in the field trip should approach the course convener.

Additional Course Costs

The field trip will cost $65 including accommodation, meals not included.

Calculator and laptop will be useful for practicals. Please advise the convenor if you do not have a laptop.

Recommended student system requirements

Remore participants should contact the course convener in the first week to discuss arrangements for their participation in practicals and the field trip. All parts of the course can be offered remotely as well as in-person, with some adaptation and adjustments.

3 Weeks 7 - 9 will focus on metamorphism. 3 x 1hr lectures and 1 x 3hr practical class per week.
4 Weeks 10 - 12 will focus on granites. 3 x 1hr lectures and 1 x 3hr practical class per week.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the Academic Integrity . In rare cases where online submission using Turnitin software is not technically possible; or where not using Turnitin software has been justified by the Course Convener and approved by the Associate Dean (Education) on the basis of the teaching model being employed; students shall submit assessment online via ‘Wattle’ outside of Turnitin, or failing that in hard copy, or through a combination of submission methods as approved by the Associate Dean (Education). The submission method is detailed below.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.


This course has been adjusted for remote participants however attendance at on-campus activities is preferable.

Quick quizzes

Short in-class weekly quizzes to assist and assess uptake of each week's lecture material. The best five of six marks will count towards the overall mark. In weeks 1 - 5 the quizzes will take place at the start of Friday's practical class (i.e. 26 Feb, 5 Mar, 12 Mar, 19 Mar, 26 Mar) and the week 6 quiz will be carried out via Wattle. For remote participants all quizzes will be done via Wattle.

Laboratory work

Each week's practical class for the first five weeks will be due for submission by 1 pm the following Friday (i.e. 5 Mar, 12 Mar, 19 Mar, 26 Mar, 2 Apr). Work will be handed back the following week.

Field trip notebook and report

Keep a field note book during the field trip (17 - 18 April 2021) and answer questions using your own observations and information contained within the field guide. Notebooks will be due at 9 am the day after the field trip (19 April).

Poster presentation

Prepare a poster (A0 , landscape) on a specified topic using peer-reviewed literature to inform you. Prepare and deliver a 3-minute presentation to summarise the poster and answer questions on your volcanic province or region. The poster session will be at 5 - 8 pm on a date to be determined, likely in the week beginning 10 May.

Practical exam

Examine thin sections, answer questions, perform calculations as specified. 1 hour.

Academic Integrity

Very minor breaches of the academic integrity principle may result in a reduction of marks of up to 10% of the total marks available for the assessment. Online Submission

You will be required to electronically sign a declaration as part of the submission of your assignment. Please keep a copy of the assignment for your records. Unless an exemption has been approved by the Associate Dean (Education) submission must be through Turnitin.

Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

Individual assessment tasks may or may not allow for late submission. Policy regarding late submission is detailed below:

  • Late submission permitted. Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension are penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.
  • Quick quizzes cannot be taken after the date on which they are scheduled.

Accepted academic practice for referencing sources that you use in presentations can be found via the links on the Wattle site, under the file named “ANU and College Policies, Program Information, Student Support Services and Assessment”. Alternatively, you can seek help through the Students Learning Development website.

Returning Assignments

Student marks will be emailed out with feedback within two weeks of the submission deadline. Where hard copies are submitted, these can be collected from the lecturer after the release of marks.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure. Extensions may be granted for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Resubmission of Assignments

Not permitted.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information.
In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service – including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy.
If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes.

Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
