The concepts of signals and systems are at the heart of our modern world. They exist in a wide range of engineering disciplines ranging from electrical and electronic systems, mechanical systems, thermal and chemical systems, to biomedical system . This course presents the common principles, theory and techniques fundamental to the analysis and design of continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems applicable to all engineering disciplines. It begins by introducing an analytical framework describing signals and systems. The following specific topics are covered subsequently: basic properties of signals and systems, linear time-invariant systems, Fourier series representations of continuous-time and discrete-time signals, signal analysis through the Fourier transform, filter design, and sampling. The mathematical concepts are illustrated with examples from different engineering disciplines and the techniques are practiced in laboratory activities.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Demonstrate understanding of continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems and analyse their properties such as causality, linearity, time invariance and stability.
- Describe and model signals and systems arising from different engineering disciplines using a common analytical framework and apply common engineering tools and techniques to problem solving across these disciplines.
- Use impulse response, frequency response and Fourier methods in analysing signals and systems in time and frequency domains, as well as low-pass, band-pass and high-pass filter designs.
- Explain the concept of sampling, the Sampling Theorem, aliasing and the Nyquist rate.
- Apply engineering design practice in a laboratory setting, individually or in a small team, and communicate the results effectively.

A standard workload of approximately 10 hours/week including the following formal contact hours: 33 - 36 hours of lectures, 5 x 1 hour tutorials, 6 x 3 hour hardware/computer laboratories
