Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, this course will not be offered in 2022.
The course introduces students to contemporary Southeast Asia by focusing on case studies from southern Vietnam. The emphasis is on integrating formal learning with first-hand research experience. The in-country work will include fieldtrips, homestays, language training, as well as formal classes given by staff from ANU and from An Giang University (Mekong Delta).
The course focuses on experiencing and understanding the complex relationships between development and the environment as seen through every day living. Students will have the opportunity to conduct group and individual research project on issues such as the changing nature of rural lives, the relationship between the modern and traditional cultural practices, rural-urban migration, concepts of human well-being, and the social and environmental impacts of tourism. The focus is on the impact of rapid change on the environment, culture, family structure and on specific groups such as villagers, migrants, farmers and women.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Demonstrate competent skills in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
- Reflect deeply on the impact of rapid change on culture, environment and local economies
- Conduct rapid research in a team environment
- Effectively communicate your experience of the field research process.
- Demonstrate basic level Vietnamese language skills
Other Information
This is an intensive course offered on an annual basis including an in country field based experience in January. Enrolment is limited and merit based. Students must register an expression of interest to enrol via the following website by 20 August 2021.
There are additional field trip fees of approximately $2000 applicable to participation in this course (payment to ANU Science Shop ). Students will also need to cover the costs of their own airfares as well as some meals. Limited New Columbo Plan scholarships are available for domestic undergraduate students.

- As well as the above-mentioned assessments (NB: A uniform reduction against all assessment items will be applied), students enrolled in the 12 unit option must complete an independent research project (3000-5000 words) that includes a seminar presenting preliminary findings. The research report is due by the end of Semester 1 teaching break and is 50% of total marks. (50) [LO 1,2,3,4]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
Three week Field School in Vietnam (early-mid January) (excluding travel to and from Vietnam) plus additional independent student research, reading and writing.
