FREN1004 provides continued intensive study of the French language, expanding on basic communication skills, vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar sufficient to become functional at an advanced elementary level, both in written and spoken French (e.g. learning tenses and modes necessary to operate in the past, present and future). The course includes authentic reading (literary and other) and further listening practice to enable students to deal with everyday situations and further develop a critical understanding of francophone cultures and societies.

- Go beyond simple communication into more complex discussions;
- Understand a reproduce more complex aspects of French pronunciation, including nasals and more complex intonation patterns;
- Compose short texts such as messages, invitations, instructions, reports, and material of a more fictional type;
- Describe aspects of the world in French, including travel, tradition and national identity, health and community; express necessity
- Read and understand short authentic texts (e.g. newspaper articles, extracts from books and novels, etc.) and poetry for enjoyment (not for detailed literary appreciation);
- Listen to/watch and appreciate short audio and video extracts (including film);
- Recognize and discuss in detail differences and similarities between their first cultures and francophone cultures;

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the Academic Integrity . In rare cases where online submission using Turnitin software is not technically possible; or where not using Turnitin software has been justified by the Course Convener and approved by the Associate Dean (Education) on the basis of the teaching model being employed; students shall submit assessment online via ‘Wattle’ outside of Turnitin, or failing that in hard copy, or through a combination of submission methods as approved by the Associate Dean (Education). The submission method is detailed below.
Moderation of Assessment
Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.
Students are not permitted to ask for help from native speakers, tutors, family or friends if the task is to be submitted for assessment. Improper collaboration of this nature constitutes academic misconduct and will be dealt with in accordance with ANU policy. Students are also not permitted to use online translators (ie, Google Translate) for more than 1-2 word phrases. In other words, you may use Google as a dictionary only (although an online dictionary such as wordreference.com is by far preferable).

This test will cover the grammatical and lexical material covered in the weeks prior to the test. It will include a listening component, grammar/vocabulary assessment, and a writing assessment. You will be assessed on your mastery of language elements taught in class (e.g., grammar and vocabulary), and on your ability to read, listen to, and compose short texts. Week 5; value: 15%
Assessment Task 2

The composition will be 250 words. It will take place in the classroom. You will be assessed on your mastery of language elements taught in class (e.g., grammar and vocabulary), and on your ability to compose a coherent, creative description. See Wattle for more information. Week 8; value: 20%

You will have homework on MindTap after almost every class period (Mon-Thurs), and you will be expected to complete each week’s homework activities by the end of the week. As mentioned above, language learning requires regular effort and attention on your part. To succeed in your learning, you must be doing these activities as they are assigned. Assessment Task 5

Language learning is a cumulative process and requires consistent effort on your part. This means coming to class prepared for that day’s content and actively taking part in all classroom activities. You are expected to:
1. have completed the preparation activities before coming to class (usually listening to thematic audio files, reading, and studying grammar points and vocabulary);
2. participate in pair and group work;
3. contribute to class discussion (usually by responding to instructor’s prompts);
4. attend all language classes.
You will be assessed on your communication skills, your pronunciation, the development of your language skills (e.g., grammar and vocabulary), and on your demonstrated understanding of francophone cultures.

Assessment Task 6

The oral test will be a scenario (4-5 minutes). You will record yourself on video (not reading from a script) and upload the video to MindTap in Week 13 (the Monday straight after classes end). See Wattle for more information.

The Academic Misconduct Rule is in place to promote academic integrity and manage academic misconduct. Very minor breaches of the academic integrity principle may result in a reduction of marks of up to 10% of the total marks available for the assessment. The ANU offers a number of online and in person services to assist students with their assignments, examinations, and other learning activities. You will be required to electronically sign a declaration as part of the submission of your assignment. Please keep a copy of the assignment for your records. Unless an exemption has been approved by the Associate Dean (Education) submission must be through Turnitin.
For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.
Individual assessment tasks may or may not allow for late submission. Policy regarding late submission is detailed below:
- Late submission not permitted. If submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date is not permitted, a mark of 0 will be awarded.
- Late submission permitted. Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension are penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.

Extensions and Penalties
Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure. Extensions may be granted for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.
Distribution of grades policy
Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes.
Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
