This course will explore the work of three German writers who revolutionized modern philosophy, theology, psychology, aesthetics, social and political science, gender studies, historiography, literature and the arts. We will be reading and discussing a selection of key writings by Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud. Along with these we will examine a sampling of texts that were important for their work, and writings that later both reflected their influence and drew their ideas in new directions.

  1. critically assess the philosophical and historical analysis of issues as undertaken by Marx, Nietzsche and Freud;
  2. demonstrate a basic understanding of the role these thinkers had in shaping the history of ideas in German-language thought; 
  3. evaluate the distinct epistemological programs developed in each thinker’s work; and
  4. develop arguments that are clearly structured, that provide evidence for their claims and that engage with nuances of the issues at stake in the simplest language possible.

Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 36 hours of contact: 18 hours of lecture/seminars and 18 hours of tutorials; and
b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed GERM3007, or have equivalent language proficiency as demonstrated by a placement test, or with permission of the convenor. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed GERM6052 or ENGL3052.

Assumed Knowledge

To enrol in this course you are assumed to have knowledge of German equivalent to completion of GERM3007: German Studies: Advanced German 1, or have an equivalent level of language proficiency as demonstrated by placement test.
