Students undertaking this course will pursue language study at an ANU partner institution in Japan. It is aimed at improving students' command of modern spoken Japanese as well as increasing their awareness of the culture in which it is used. The themes dealt with in the course will differ from year to year but may include such topics as natural disasters and the environment, youth and ageing and sport and leisure. Entry into the course is available through a competitive application process.

Incompatibilities and prerequisites

JPNS2525 (Osaka) – is for students who have completed (as a rule) JPNS2003 and JPNS2005.  Course is in lieu of, and incompatible with, JPNS2012.


JPNS2525 (Akita) – is for students who have completed (as a rule) JPNS3002 and/or JPNS3005, JPNS3006, JPNS3007, or JPNS3008.  Considered to be on a par with JPNS3005-3008 classes in terms of difficulty. No incompatibilities as it does not replace, but rather supplements existing courses. 


Proficiency level
Students who successfully complete this course at Osaka will typically achieve a level of proficiency roughly equivalent to JLPT N4-3 to N5-4, depending on their performance and degree of engagement.

Students who successfully complete this course at Akita will typically achieve a level of proficiency roughly equivalent to JLPT N2 to N3, depending on their performance and degree of engagement.

This is a co-taught course. Any cap on enrolments in one course applies to both courses combined.

Indicative Assessment

Students participating in this course are required to successfully complete intensive language study at the host institution. 

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

This course is offered through intensive delivery in non-standard academic sessions. Students will receive an 'EE' result for this course and have credit allocated to their degree on successful completion of the study at the host institution.
