An essential skill in contemporary clinical psychology, and for any independently practising clinical psychologist, is the ability to develop, present, and assess appropriate professional development activities. This course is designed to assist the third year doctoral student in developing the necessary strategies and techniques for successful workshop presentation as well as the opportunity to research and gain skills in an area of advanced clinical work.
At the beginning of this sub-course, each student should contact the Course Convenor to be allocated a workshop supervisor, from the clinical faculty, who will oversee the student’s presentation of a workshop in PSYC9016 DPsych Clinical Coursework VI. During the semester the student will negotiate with the supervisor a suitable topic for the workshop. The topic of the workshop should comply with guidelines as to an appropriate evidence base. This semester will be spent developing the workshop and presenting an outline and summary of the workshop for the supervisor's approval.
Forensic Clinical Psychology (Convenor: Antionette Harmer)
This sub-course consists of a series of practically orientated workshops on applications of Clinical Psychology in legal settings. Topics include assessing and treating forensic mental health clients; forensic report writing; assessment in child court cases; assessment for compensable injuries; assessment of competencies; family court assessments.

- Possess the necessary strategies and techniques for successful workshop preparation and presentation as well as gain further knowledge and skills in an area of advanced clinical work.
- Understand the legal arena in Australia and the various ways Psychologists can be involved.
- Understand and manage the ways in which a clinical psychologist may be drawn into legal matters, including undertanding subpoenas, confidentiality, and attending and giving evidence in court.
- Understand issues in forensic psychology in family or children's matters, civil matters and criminal matters.
- Have skills in writing reports as a treating practitioner or independent expert.
- Understand and practice giving evidence and being cross examined in court (actual court setting experience with legal practitioners).
Indicative Assessment
The assessment for each sub-course equals 1/2 of the total assessment for the course.
Advanced Clinical Workshops : Presentation of a three-hour workshop to 2nd and 3rd year clinical students.
Forensic Clinical Psychology: Written practioners report, forensic assessment outline/report, client interview report, participation in court based practicum, short answer exam.
