This course introduces students to the fundamental tools of advanced Sinological research. It opens with a survey of the history of Sinology as an intellectual discipline and a critical engagement with influential works from that discipline. It then addresses the procedures for handling such issues as chronology, geography, bureaucracy, biography, and bibliography in the study of China. These procedures are not exhaustive in any sense; they will be shaped by students' individual research needs. The aim of the course is therefore not to convey factual information but to lead students from a dependent and passive approach to the study of China towards a critical and self-sufficient style of research.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Identify the major themes, issues, and methods of Sinological research, both past and present, and evaluate the ways in which they have been addressed in different contexts.
- Demonstrate the methods of advanced Sinological research necessary to locate and interpret information from a variety of sources, both pre-modern and modern, and to apply that information to solving specific practical research questions.
- Present research findings in written forms that might enable their explication to an audience of contemporaries.

Workload
One weekly seminar. The total workload of the course is 130 hours including in class time and independent study.
