This course offers an introduction to Cantonese with an emphasis mainly on communicative ability and partly on comparison with Standard Modern Chinese. It is for students who have no or very limited prior knowledge of Cantonese language and may not be able to read Cantonese phonetics. At this level, students will study Cantonese pronunciation and how to initiate or respond to basic conversations in Cantonese in daily activities such as greetings, introductions, eating in and eating out.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Recognise and pronounce all Cantonese initials, finals and nine tones in six distinct tone contours.
2. Use an active vocabulary of around 1,800 items.
3. Identify and produce practised phrase and sentence structures in colloquial Cantonese to conduct basic conversations, write sentences and simple paragraphs, and read simplified texts.
4. Converse on such topics as: personal encounters, family and friends, eating in and eating out, getting around, shopping, recreation, basic health care, fashion and education.
5. Display an understanding of cultural communication practices in family, at work places, and in living communities.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website Students may choose not to submit assessment items through Turnitin. In this instance you will be required to submit, alongside the assessment item itself, hard copies of all references included in the assessment item.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Participation

Both lecturer and tutorial attendance are required for this course.

Examination(s)

There are three formal examinations for this course: Mid-semester oral test, End-of-semester oral test, and End-of-semester written test. The end-of-semester oral test will be held during the exam period while the other two exams will be held during class time.

Assessment Task 1

Participation

Participation is not equal to 'Attendance'. The participation grade is given based on individual student's engagement in the course throughout the semester. Students are required to actively participate in class activities in both the weekly lecturer and the tutorial. They are also expected to complete self-learning tasks and their in-class performance should reflect the progress they have made by completing these tasks. Participation accounts for 10% of the final grade.

Assessment Task 2

Online quizzes

There are 3 online quizzes throughout the semester. Each quiz assesses content in the previous 2-3 weeks and consists of 10-15 questions. These online quizzes allow one attempt only and will open for 10 days across 2 weeks. Students are required to complete the quiz at their convenient time. Each quiz will account for 5% of the final grade.

Assessment Task 3

Mid-semester oral test

The mid-semester oral test will be held at tutorial times in week 6. Students will attend the test in pairs. The test includes prepared dialogue presentation and spontaneous Q&A. Students are tested at course content taught in weeks 1-6. This test accounts for 15% of the final grade.

Assessment Task 4

Vlog assignment: One day out with friends/family

This is a task that assesses students' oral skills. Students are asked to make a vlog in Cantonese that documents one day out with their friends or family. The are required to actively use language points they have learned so far. They should upload the vlog file on Wattle to submit the assignment. The assessment instructions will be available in week 5. Students will have week 6 and the mid-term break to finish the assignment.

Assessment Task 5

Essay writing: Cantonese and the world

This is an essay assignment that asks students to write a reflective piece based on provided materials. It encourages students to explore and research aspects of the Cantonese culture and Cantonese diaspora and aims to cultivate a better cultural understanding of the community where the target language is spoken. Key concepts about the Cantonese diaspora are introduced in week 11 lecture. This assignment accounts for 15% of the final grade.

Assessment Task 6

End-of-semester written test

The written test is a 90 minutes test that covers all taught content in the course. Question types may include multiple choice, blank filling, short-answer questions, sentence making, and translation. The written test is held on site for students on campus, and digitally for students attending through remote access. The test accounts for 15% of the final grade.

Assessment Task 7

End-of-semester oral test

This test is an individual oral test including a semi-prepared speech and spontaneous Q&A. For preparation, students are given 4-5 speech topics. They need to prepare for each topic and will be asked to delivery a speech on one of the topics during test time. The speech delivery will be followed by spontaneous Q&A with questions extended from the topic. The final oral test accounts for 15% of the final grade.

Online Submission

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

No submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date will be permitted. If an assessment task is not submitted by the due date, a mark of 0 will be awarded.

Alternatively, you can seek help through the Students Learning Development website.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information. In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service — including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy. If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
