This course will explore the city of Rome through the analysis of its cultural representations as well as on-site visits to culturally significant neighborhoods, cultural sites, museums and film locations. Taking the city as an analytical object, the course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Rome's complex history and its role in constructing, reinforcing and re-inventing Italian cultural and political identity. To this end, the course will question widespread assumptions and dominant narratives concerning Rome as a global tourist destination and as the cultural and political capital of Italy. Topics covered in the course include the legacy of colonial history, migration, and youth marginalization. The methodological approach and the material covered in this course will develop students' understanding of Italian history, culture and identity, providing them with a deeper insight into Italy's complex past and present.
Travel Approval: Students will only be permitted to travel upon completion of ANU required documentation, including, where required, the travel to a high risk destination form and the approval of all documentation by the relevant delegate.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- critically analyse cultural representations of Rome in relation to Italian history, culture and identity;
- compare and contextualise literary, cinematic, and historical texts in Italian;
- develop an understanding of Italian political and cultural identities through exploration of key sites, artifacts, visual and written texts and encounters in Rome;
- formulate, present, and evaluate original arguments and analyses in written and oral Italian; and
- navigate on-site language immersion, conducting intellectual and everyday cultural interactions with native Italian speakers in Italian.

Workload
130 hours of total student learning time, comprising:a) 75 hours of contact during two weeks of immersive study on-site in Rome, with two preparatory seminars on campus in the months preceding travel; and
b) 55 hours of individual research and group work, in Rome and at home.
