This is an advanced research course that offers students an individualised course of study under the guidance of a supervisor. It involves in-depth reading, analysis and writing in an area directly relevant to the their thesis research. The course research topic and readings are to be negotiated by the supervisor and the student, and the course will focus on planning and conducting a piece of research, and on academic skills development.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of background and current literature relevant to a specific research topic.
- Identify and evaluate key debates in a field of study, and articulate these to an advanced level in written form.
- Articulate research questions and unresolved issues arising from a body of literature.
Indicative Assessment
- 1. Literature Review/Annotated bibliography In the 1,000-word literature review, the student is expected to demonstrate an understanding of assigned literature on descriptive linguistics as well as the debates, research questions, and unresolved issues arising from the body of literature.3. Research Paper (30) [LO 1,2,3]
- 2. Research Paper This 4,000-5,000 word essay allows the student to present the results of their research in written form. The aim of the research paper is for students to further develop their academic writing skills, particularly in: the concise discussion of relevant literature, the balanced presentation of debates in the field, and the articulation of new research questions. It is expected that the research paper overlaps in some way with the student's thesis research. (70) [LO 1,2,3]
