This course examines the evolution of the Roman state from the foundation of the city of Rome in 753 BC to the death of Augustus in AD 14. These eight centuries saw Rome establish itself as a monarchy, then overthrow its kings and establish a Republican system of government, only for the Republic itself to disintegrate from within and become a monarchy once again. During the same period, Rome evolved and expanded from one city on the Tiber River to an empire that stretched from Spain in the west to Syria in the east, from Germany in the north to Africa in the south. This course will examine why and how these major political and institutional changes came about and their impact on the social and cultural framework of Roman society.
