SELT Survey Results

This course introduces students to developing and critically addressing an independent research question relevant to their own art practice or field of specialisation. Providing strategies to help refine, structure, and present a position and argument, it is aimed at students engaged in either practice-led research or art history and art theory. Students will learn to frame research questions, articulate construct logical arguments and explore ways to understand and contextualise their research. To deepen their critical understanding of art within historical and contemporary contexts, students will develop skills in writing and oral communication by locating, interpreting, and critically evaluating key information from academic resources. It is structured around seminar presentations and guest lectures, including academics artists, curators, and writers, and involves visits to collections and displays at national institutions where different examples of research approaches are demonstrated and tested.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. identify a relevant research topic in context of their own art practice or specialisation;
  2. develop critical thinking, visual analysis, literacy and academic skills to plan and present an independent research proposal;
  3. undertake an independent research project at an advanced level; and
  4. demonstrate critical points of view in a reasoned, referenced, and clearly structured analysis in both written and audio-visual forms.

Research-Led Teaching

This course is taught by research-focused academic staff with high-profile art historical and art and design practices and who apply independent research skills to their field in diverse ways.

Field Trips

A field trip to the National Gallery of Australia will be scheduled for week 7. Students will be expected to provide their own transport and meet at the venue in a timely manner.

Whether you are on campus or studying remotely, there are a variety of online platforms you will use to participate in your study program. These could include videos for lectures and other instruction, two-way video conferencing for interactive learning, email and other messaging tools for communication, interactive web apps for formative and collaborative activities, print and/or photo/scan for handwritten work and drawings, and home-based assessment.

ANU outlines recommended student system requirements to ensure you are able to participate fully in your learning. Other information is also available about the various Learning Platforms you may use.

Staff Feedback

Students will be given feedback in the following forms in this course:

  • written comments
  • verbal comments
  • feedback to whole class, groups, individuals, focus group etc

Student Feedback

ANU is committed to the demonstration of educational excellence and regularly seeks feedback from students. Students are encouraged to offer feedback directly to their Course Convener or through their College and Course representatives (if applicable). Feedback can also be provided to Course Conveners and teachers via the Student Experience of Learning & Teaching (SELT) feedback program. SELT surveys are confidential and also provide the Colleges and ANU Executive with opportunities to recognise excellent teaching, and opportunities for improvement.

Policies

ANU has educational policies, procedures and guidelines , which are designed to ensure that staff and students are aware of the University’s academic standards, and implement them. Students are expected to have read the Academic Integrity Rule before the commencement of their course. Other key policies and guidelines include:

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the Academic Skills website. In rare cases where online submission using Turnitin software is not technically possible; or where not using Turnitin software has been justified by the Course Convener and approved by the Associate Dean (Education) on the basis of the teaching model being employed; students shall submit assessment online via ‘Wattle’ outside of Turnitin, or failing that in hard copy, or through a combination of submission methods as approved by the Associate Dean (Education). The submission method is detailed below.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Participation

Students are expected to participate actively in the course in person, which includes seminars, tutorials, and attending to tasks and assessment items in a timely manner. Students are also expected to manage their own time effectively through independent research. Satisfactory attendance is understood as missing no more than one tutorial session during the semester without documentary evidence of illness or extraordinary misfortune.

Assessment Task 1

Participation in class forums, workshops and completion of set activities (1000 words)

Participation in class forums, workshops and completion of set activities contributes to assignments 2,3, and ultimately supports the the long essay, assignment 4. The weekly tasks from weeks 1-10 aim to develop and assess the student's critical thinking or analytical abilities, improve and assess the student's independent research skills, and to practice and assess a student's written and verbal communication skills. Class modules in weeks 1-10 progressively cover the training and learning for this assignment and all supporting information and resources will be provided on the course wattle course site. The tasks will be progressively graded and students will be provided with feedback in a timely manner. Minimum 100 words per week.

Seminar presentation (10 min, 1000 words + Audio/Visual files)

This exercise is designed to develop and assess independent research skills required for students at a post-graduate coursework level. This assignment will be based on the workshop activities for weeks 1-4. The purpose of this exercise is to develop professional academic skills by writing a scripted presentation paper and delivering it to the class either week 5 or 6. The presentation will include;

  • the proposed independent research question,
  • a visual analysis of the work in question,
  • 5-6 high quality visual resources appropriately captioned
  • the contexts in which the work is positioned,
  • the research methodologies the student intends to use, and;
  • an overview key resources that will support the writing of the major essay (assignment 4).

The presentation will be 10 minutes in length and must be accompanied by slides formatted on powerpoint or a similar program with no more than 6 high quality slides. Following the convention of a postgraduate research symposium, speakers will be strictly limited to 10 minutes for their papers and keep to time. The presentation will need to be scripted (approximately 1,000 words) and practiced in advance. Please note that a presentation paper is not written in the same tone as an essay. It must be scholarly, but the language you use can be a little more conversational to make for a more engaging experience for your audience. For further tips see https://www.anu.edu.au/students/academic-skills/writing-assessment/presentations

The whole assignment is due at the end of week 6, cand will be graded according to the rubric below. It includes the following assessment items;

  • 10 min in-person scripted presentation with visual documentation,
  • 1000 word written script with visual documentation to be uploaded to Turnitin, and;

Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy.
If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes.

Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
