This course equips biology students with skills in basic mathematics, statistics and computing in preparation for areas of biology which require quantitative data analysis. Such skills are important for experimental design and for analysing and interpreting quantitative datasets arising from modern bioinformatics and biological modelling. Topics covered include introductory calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics, and elementary computer programming. Examples will be given of quantitative problems arising in biological contexts. Laboratory and/or field practicals may be used for data gathering.

Note: Graduate students attend joint classes with undergraduates but will be assessed separately

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Apply and communicate the basic concepts of calculus and linear algebra and their use in biology.
  2. Demonstrate accurate and efficient use of probability and statistics in the analysis of biological data.
  3. Write computer codes using the statistical programming language R.
  4. Apply the basic concepts of mathematics, statistics and computing to biological problems.

Workload

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the semester including:

  • Face-to face component, which may consist of:
  • In weeks 1-6: 1 x 2 hour lectorial, 1 x 2 hour workshop plus 2 hours of preparation per week
  • In weeks 7-12: 1 hour of pre-recorded lectures, 1 x 1 hour of live flipped classroom activities, 1 x 3-hour workshop plus 2 hours of preparation per week
  • Approximately 52 hours of self directed study, which will include preparation for lectorials, workshops plus individual work and other assessment tasks.
