This course investigates key theoretical and methodological approaches in Demography. Students enrolled in this course will critically analyse a range of demographic readings and participate in research design and analytical methods.
Topics in the course will explore the methods and materials of demographers through different theoretical and research approaches. Students will develop theoretically sound research questions, design aligned research design, and identify appropriate data and methods to conduct their honours thesis.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- critically evaluate demographic theories;
- demonstrate the ability to engage with disciplinary debates;
- construct an evidence-based argument on population issues using a demographic perspective;
- develop a theoretically based research design; and
- provide constructive feedback to others

Workload
260 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 36 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 18 hours of reading seminar, and 18 hours of workshop; and
b) 224 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
