This course will focus on the theory and methods that are used to describe and predict the motion of aircraft. Students will learn mathematical models and useful techniques that can be used to analyse, simulate and evaluate flying and handling qualities of an aircraft. Concepts of guidance and navigation, as well as control are discussed.

Building on the analysis-oriented aerodynamics, students will learn to apply key classical principles of configuration aerodynamics to give them a design-oriented perspective into the development and analysis of aircraft aerodynamics and provide them with skills to approach the configuration aerodynamic design process.

Topics will include point-mass dynamics and forces, low-speed aerodynamics in 2D and 3D, induced drag and high-speed aerodynamics, power, thrust and flight envelop in cruising, performance during gliding, climbing, and turning, analysis of time and frequency response, and the role of flight and wind tunnel testing.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Employ linearized longitudinal and lateral-directional equations of motion to compute the flight path for an aircraft, including.
  2. Describe aircraft control devices and systems and longitudinal and lateral-directional dynamics.
  3. Use root-locus analysis of parameter variations, feedback control and control derivatives to determine aerodynamic equilibrium.
  4. Perform analyses of aircraft performance during gliding, climbing, and turning, and time and frequency response.
  5. Evaluate flight stability and handling qualities of an aircraft against flying qualities criteria, and their effect on aircraft operations and performance.
  6. Investigate computational techniques to model aircraft performance, and their suitability to model performance at high angles and angular rates at different speeds, attitude and under different atmospheric conditions.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Laboratories (20) [LO 1,2,3]
  2. Design Project (40) [LO 4,5,6]
  3. Final Exam (40) [LO 1,2,3,4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

130 hours per semester consisting of the following activities:

·      Approximately, 3-5 hours of face-to face component, which may consist of 1 x 2 hour interactive lecture, 1 x 2 hour tutorial per week, and 4 x 3 hour laboratory sessions.

·      Approximately 5-7 hours of self-study per week which will include self-directed study using the modular content in preparation for interactive lectures and other assessment tasks.
