SELT Survey Results

This course is designed to familiarise students with the components of the financial system as well as to introduce them to the three basic ideas underpinning finance, namely the time value of money, diversification and arbitrage. In doing so, the course provides students with introductory exposure to financial transactions, institutions and markets including money markets, stock markets, foreign exchange and derivative markets and the instruments traded therein. It also provides students with a solid foundation for later studies in finance.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Explain basic financial transactions, institutions and markets, including money markets, stock markets, foreign exchange, derivatives markets and contracts.
  2. Discuss the concept of time value of money and calculate the value of cash flows relating to a number of financial instruments.
  3. Explain the concept of diversification, including the risk and return relationship and calculate optimal weights for a portfolio comprising of two financial assets.
  4. Discuss concepts of arbitrage, and utilise derivatives for risk management purposes.

Research-Led Teaching

Students undertaking this course will be taught fundamental skills in Finance that will be applied to real life applications. Students will also be shown how these techniques are applied to research today.

The final exam will contain material from the entire semester. You will require reliable assess to Wattle and a calculator for the duration of the online quizzes and the online exam.

Scaling

You final mark for the course will be based on the raw marks allocated for each of your assessment items. However, your final mark may not be the same number as produced by that formulate, as marks may be scaled. Any scaling applied will preserve the rank order of raw marks (i.e. if your raw mark exceeds that of another student, then your scaled mark will exceed or be the same as the scaled mark of that student), and may result in a score that is either higher or lower than the raw mark calculated.

Assessment Requirements

As a further academic integrity control, students may be selected for a 15 minutes individual oral examination of their written assessment submissions.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the Academic Integrity . In rare cases where online submission using Turnitin software is not technically possible; or where not using Turnitin software has been justified by the Course Convener and approved by the Associate Dean (Education) on the basis of the teaching model being employed; students shall submit assessment online via ‘Wattle’ outside of Turnitin, or failing that in hard copy, or through a combination of submission methods as approved by the Associate Dean (Education). The submission method is detailed below.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Participation

Course content delivery will take a hybrid format. The weekly lectures will be delivered either on campus (recorded and available via echo360 on Wattle) or online live via Zoom (recorded and available via echo360 on Wattle). Each week, the students will be notified of the form of lecture delivery over the Wattle announcement forum at least one week prior to the scheduled lecture. Weekly workshops (available via echo360 on Wattle) will be pre-recorded and weekly tutorials will be delivered in hybrid format (on campus, live through scheduled Zoom sessions (not recorded) and also available as separate pre-recorded videos).

Wattle Quizzes

Five online (Wattle) quizzes (each with 25 minutes of writing time) will be conducted throughout the semester to enable students to receive feedback on their learning and understanding of the material. These quizzes will run according to the schedule in the "Class Structure and Content" section of this summary (unless otherwise stated by the lecturer). The content for the quizzes will be limited to the required material for the topic on which the tutorial is held (i.e. previous week’s lecture and workshop material). Every 25-minute quiz will run on Friday of each quiz week over a 60-minute window. The marked quizzes and the solutions will be provided during the following week on Wattle. Each quiz is worth 8% of the overall course grade with each quiz being redeemable against the final exam. In total, the quizzes are worth 40% (if none of the quizzes are redeemed) of the overall course grade. Details pertaining to the submission of quiz answers as well as a practice quiz (worth 0%) will be provided on Wattle and discussed during the first lecture.

Final Examination

The final examination will be open-book and based on all the content covered throughout the duration of the semester. The final examination is worth 60% of the overall course grade (if none of the quizzes are redeemed) and will be conducted remotely over Wattle. The exam will include a mixture of theoretical and numerical questions. Students will be provided with further details regarding the exam as it approaches (no later than week 10).

Late Submission

No late submission of assessment tasks will be permitted. If an assessment task is not submitted by the due date and time, a mark of 0 will be awarded.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure. Extensions may be granted for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information.
In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service – including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy.
If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes.

Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
