SELT Survey Results

This course introduces students to the techniques of econometrics. The emphasis is on the essential ideas and the applications of econometric methods, with the material derived using a mixture of rigour and intuition. The course covers appropriate tools for cross-sectional (observations on several economic units - usually countries, firms or households - at a single point in time), time series (observations for one economic unit over time), and panel (observations on several economic units followed through time) datasets. It starts with the linear regression model and then move to introductions to micro-econometric and macro-econometric techniques.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Understand the essential ideas and applications of econometric methods.
  2. Understand different types of data (times series and cross-sectional) and their associated problems and solutions.
  3. Analyse simple datasets using econometric software (R).
  4. Present econometric results in a readily usable form and be able to interpret and explain econometric results.
  5. Understand how econometric methods can be used to provide evidence for making policy decisions.

Research-Led Teaching

This course is research-focused in the sense that students are required to apply econometric techniques to real data and answer questions that are policy relevant.

Assessment Requirements

Weekly group in-class presentation

This group-based assessment (starts from week 2) covers the learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

It aims to foster collaboration in learning among students and encourage students' in-class participation. This group membership will change every week. Students are assigned randomly into groups, which are randomly chosen to solve problems during weekly tutorials. Students' performance will be marked jointly by the lecturer (50% of the weight) and other non-presenting students (50% of the weight).

The second is to encourage collaboration and cohort experience among students.

Online Submission

Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

No late submission is allowed in this course. You may get some assessments redemptive to the final exam if you have legitimate reasons.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
