This course explores established and emerging Indigenous concerns and priorities in relation to the theory and practice of development. It maintains a strong focus on the
local Australian context but also engages international comparisons. The course is arranged as a series of curated seminars presented by academics and practitioners, First Nations and non-Indigenous peoples.
Topics covered include Indigenous statistics and data sovereignty, Indigenous approaches to wellbeing and sustainability, deficit versus strengths-based approaches, community development, alternate development, land tenure and development in place, Indigenous economies, cultural and natural resource management, young people and development, engagement with large-scale resource projects, the significance of culture, development in urban locales and the role of government and governance.
This course is co-taught with INDG8001 but includes provision for students to undertake a desktop research project on a negotiated topic related to Indigenous peoples and development.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander priorities for development;
- Articulate major debates in the theory and practice of Indigenous development;
- Analyse other people's writing about Indigenous development;
- Write critically and analytically about Indigenous development theory and practice as it relates to Australia;
- demonstrate the process of research design, including articulate a research problem, use appropriate analytical approaches and supporting evidence, and choose styles of presentation.
