SELT Survey Results

Japanese 2: Written aims to further develop your knowledge and competence in modern written Japanese. The course will focus on reading and writing skills and on using all three of the writing systems appropriately in a cohesive text. In this course you will learn 180 kanji characters on top of the 120 kanji introduced in JPNS1014 Japanese 1: Written. During the semester you will be introduced to different types of texts, will learn to write compositions of up to 1200 characters in length and read short passages (approximately 1200 characters) on various topics. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Use an active written vocabulary of around 300 kanji and a passive vocabulary of around 500 kanji.
  2. Use grammatical points and constructions necessary to produce and comprehend various basic sentences in a range of everyday short texts.
  3. Read and compose passages of 1200 characters on topics that include family, daily routines and normal life.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the cultural context gained through reading short passages on topics such as the seasons and annual events in Japan.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. In this instance you will be required to submit, alongside the assessment item itself, hard copies of all references included in the assessment item.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.


Regular attendance is essential to keep up with the course schedule, and students are expected to attend all classes. Your participation in class activities is an important part of learning. However, attendance and participation won’t be an assessment criterion. Attendance will not be recorded and will not be reflected in assessment.

Weekly online quizzes (25%)

There will be online weekly quizzes (25%), 11 quizzes throughout the semester. The best 10 quiz scores will be counted towards the assessment. The results and feedback will be available immediately after the quizzes are closed. No late submission will be accepted unless you have a legitimate reason which prevents you from attending the course for a significant duration (two weeks or longer). You are required to submit an official document (e.g. medical certificate) for this. Although each quiz has a set of target Kanji, expression, grammar, and so on, those items which were studied in previous weeks and Japanese 1: Written will also be tested in the weekly quizzes.

Assignment 1 (9%); Assignment 2 (13%); Assignment 3 (13%)

There will be three assignments to be completed this semester. The Assignments will include sentence making, translation, reading comprehension, a composition and so on. You will need to download each Assignment from the course Wattle site and follow the instruction for each Assignment. When submitting, your Assignment needs to include your u-number and to be submitted in Wattle. The assignments will be returned two weeks after the due date. (Assessment rubrics is available in the course Wattle site.)

Final exam (40%)

The final examination will be held during the university examination period. The exam is a hurdle assessment. Failure in the final examination will result in automatic failure for the whole course, even if you have sufficient marks in other assessment criteria. In this case your final course result will default to the mark achieved in the final examination. A more detailed information will be available on Wattle.

Online Submission

Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension are penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Resubmission of Assignments

Re-submission is in principle not allowed for any assessment items in this course, unless otherwise permitted by the course convenor.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information. Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
