This is an in-person course. Contact your course convener or supervisor to see if your project can be undertaken remotely

This course allows guided research on a neuroscience topic for individuals who wish to gain research skills and experience not covered in other courses taught in the School. 

The research project is guided by a an academic supervisor at ANU or in collaboration with an affiliated institute.  Students identify a supervisor after discussion with the course convener.

This is a capstone course, usually completed in the final semester of a coursework masters program

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Plan and engage in an independent and sustained investigation of a chosen research topic supervised by an academic staff.
  2. Systematically identify relevant theory and concepts in the chosen field, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions.
  3. Carry out a specific set of experiments in neuroscience to address a particular research question, at a standard consistent with current published research in the field.
  4. Accurately document and analyse laboratory work and research findings
  5. Present research findings, both orally and written to a high standard

Indicative Assessment

  1. A written report of the research project (75) [LO 1,2,3,5]
  2. A research lab book (15) [LO 3,4]
  3. A research seminar (10) [LO 2,5]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours per 6 units of enrolment throughout the semester including:

  • The project is expected to involve 80 hours of lab or project work per 6 units or enrolment throughout the semester.
  • Approximately 50 hours of individual work per 6 units, which will include preparation individual work, including preparation of report, presentations and other assessment tasks

Students are expected to actively participate and contribute towards discussions.
