This is an undergraduate laboratory course to provide students with hands-on experience in working with photonics components, devices and instruments. These experiments are designed to reinforce theoretical concepts introduced in fibre optic communications and photonic sensing, and require independent design, planning, implementation and testing of photonic systems.

- Understand and gain experience with photonic system design;
- Develop and implement solutions for photonic applications;
- Analyse and critically evaluate system performance;
- Demonstrate proficiency in working with a wide variety of photonic devices, techniques and systems integration;
- Effectively communicate decisions and solutions using appropriate media to professional and lay audiences;
- Demonstrate ability to work in a team environment.
Indicative AssessmentAssessment will be based on:
- Individual log books for experimental log entries (10%) LO: 1,2,3,4
- 3x full 20-page group lab reports (50%) LO: 1,2,3,4,6
- 3x group oral presentations (30%) LO: 1,3,5,6
- Individual assessments (10%) LO: 5,6

Assumed Knowledge12 units of university level mathematics for physicists and engineers; 12 units of first year university advanced level physics.
