This course is available for in-person and remote (online) learning.

This course introduces students to original research. Students identify their own research questions and hypotheses, conduct research, and complete a professional and/or academic research paper. The completed papers are expected to make a contribution to important policy debates and/or to the academic literature. Well-written reports are recommended for publication in the Program's Discussion Paper series.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. On satisfying the requirements for this course, students will have the knowledge to design and conduct original research. Students will also develop their writing and presentation skills.

Other Information

Each student is allocated a supervisor for the duration of the project. Students are required to attend group discussion sessions and academic research skills workshops.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Assessment is based on the satisfactory completion of a 17 - 20,000 word research paper. Students must also make a presentation of findings at the end of semester. (100) [LO null]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

There are approximately 6-8 contact hours for academic skills workshop and presentations plus time spent with individual supervisors. Because this is a research project, students will spend most time working independently. The workload is potentially higher than for a normal 12-unit course.
