This is an advanced Standard Modern Chinese language course, designed for students who have successfully completed Advanced Modern Chinese A , or have achieved the equivalence approved to enrol by proficiency assessment.
The course places special emphasis on reading comprehension of texts on issues concerning contemporary China. It will be taught mainly in Chinese. It relies heavily on students' self-study and pre-class preparation. Students will be required to give oral presentations in Chinese, engage in real-issue debates and conduct real time interviews as part of the course assessment. They will also write a research-based essay in Chinese by utilizing primary sources on an approved self-chosen topic. The lectures will focus on facilitating students' learning and oral development.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Demonstrate advanced language skills in reading, writing, literary analysis and debate in Chinese and an understanding of some of the features of modern and contemporary Chinese literature and culture.
- Communicate confidently in writing and speaking, and in groups, on topics drawn from a variety of reading materials from representative works of Chinese literature and culture.
- Demonstrate appropriate listening, speech-making and presentation skills, to present academic arguments fluently and clearly.
- Demonstrate information gathering skills and the ability to compose academic essays on Chinese literature.
Students will be given feedback in the following forms in this course:

- Feedback to the whole class, to groups, and to individuals

Assessment RequirementsThe ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website Students may choose not to submit assessment items through Turnitin. In this instance you will be required to submit, alongside the assessment item itself, hard copies of all references included in the assessment item.
Moderation of AssessmentMarks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.
Engaging in all the learning activities in and outside classes, including group work, preparation and contribution, and attendance. Late arrival and early departure will count as absence.

The test will cover key vocabulary, language points and content of the readings in the current and the previous weeks. It serves as an incentive for students to come to class well prepared. No make-up tests are offered.

Handwritten in Chinese. Length: 2 pages in Chinese writing paper (on Wattle).
The reflection encourages students to engage with the readings and critical thinking on the basis of understanding of the views expressed in the readings. It is also an exercise on writing skills in Chinese.

Assessment Task 3

Research project. Step 1. Project proposal
The project is aimed at further developing reading, writing and oral presentation skills in Chinese, as well as enhancing critical and balanced views and nuanced analytical skills
Present the proposal as a group in class and submit it after the presentation.
The assessment will be at the group level unless there is apparent imbalance of contribution and quality of presentation.
The written proposal should be around 2 pages (excluding references), typed, double spacing, letter size 12.

Research project. Step 2. Poster session
Poster: A succinct summary display of the project, including the main findings and key references. Depending on the circumstances, the session may be in-person (poster) or online (ppt)
Presentation: Each group presents the project using the poster as an aid. The presentation is assessed at the individual level.

Research project. Step 3. Essay
This is an individual work; each student is to write up the research paper on their own.
Length: 4-5 typed pages in Chinese, excluding references. Format: letter size 12, default margin, double spacing, APA or Harvard referencing style.
NOTE: A self-reflection is required to accompany the essay. The self-reflection should outline in detail your contribution and the contribution of your team members at each stage of the project. You may raise issues and concerns. Deduction of marks will be made if there is no self-assessment.

Hardcopy SubmissionFor some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.
No submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date will be permitted. If an assessment task is not submitted by the due date, a mark of 0 will be awarded.

Extensions and PenaltiesExtensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.
Distribution of grades policyAcademic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
