SELT Survey Results

The course examines how individuals and firms make decisions by weighing up costs and benefits, and how the interaction of their decisions leads to market and social outcomes. The model of market supply and demand is employed to examine the effects of taxes, subsidies, and other government interventions in market activity. The implications of different market structures, including perfect competition and monopoly, are examined.  Public goods, externalities and common resources are key examples of cases in which private markets may yield socially sub-optimal outcomes.  Such cases are examined and the role of government policy in correcting for these is discussed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of the economic principles that underpin modern economics;
  2. have a basic understanding of the way budget constrained individuals make optimising choices and the way resources are allocated in private markets;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the role of different trading arrangements in markets and their impact on prices and the quantities traded;
  4. use basic economic principles to evaluate the effects of government interventions and other exogenous changes in markets;
  5. evaluate the effects of government interventions in markets;
  6. present clearly written analysis of economic issues and problems

Research-Led Teaching

Theory and examples covered in the course are derived from research in the field of economics.

Exams will be held remotely through the Class Wattle Site. Stable and reliable internet connection is necessary and a web camera for invigilation via zoom.

Tutorial Registration

Workshops this semester will be delivered both on-campus (Workshop type A) and remotely via Zoom (Workshop type B). You are expected to attend one Workshop each week from Week 2 onwards. You must enrol in a Workshop using the Wattle site for this course, and attend the Workshop in which you are enrolled. A selection of workshops will be open for enrolment in O-week - the remaining Workshops will be open in week 1 of Semester. When Workshops are available for enrolment, follow these steps:


1.   Log on to Wattle, and go to the course site

2.   Click on the link “Workshop enrolment”

3.   On the right of the screen, click on the tab “Become Member of…..” for the tutorial class you wish to enter

4.   Confirm your choice


If you need to change your enrolment, you will be able to do so by clicking on the tab “Leave group….” and then re-enrol in another group. You will not be able to enrol in groups that have reached their maximum number. Please note that enrolment in ISIS must be finalised for you to have access to Wattle.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the Academic Integrity . In rare cases where online submission using Turnitin software is not technically possible; or where not using Turnitin software has been justified by the Course Convener and approved by the Associate Dean (Education) on the basis of the teaching model being employed; students shall submit assessment online via ‘Wattle’ outside of Turnitin, or failing that in hard copy, or through a combination of submission methods as approved by the Associate Dean (Education). The submission method is detailed below.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Participation

Lectures for ECON1101 will be delivered both via pre-recorded modules and on campus live lectures. On Monday of each week pre-recorded modules will be be uploaded to the wattle site. In addion live lectures will be held on campus on Tuesday 11-12 and Thursday 1-2pm (both in Kambri MCH). These lectures will cover addtional material to the modules and thus attendance is required. Those students unable to make the on campus lectures will be able to access the Echo360 recordings via Wattle. If circumstances change, the live lectures will revert to pre-recorded modules.


Attendance at synchronous activities, while not compulsory, is expected in line with “Code of Practice for Teaching and Learning”, clause 2 paragraph (b).


In addition, workshops for this course are a discussion-based class and your participation and engagement with this will form part of your grade for the course. Providing worked solutions would not effectively compensate for missing a workshop. Students who, through unavoidable and unplanned occurrences, are unable to attend a workshop one week are encouraged to work through the problems and attend a consultation session for discussion and solutions.

Examination(s)

Workshop Answer Submissions

Each week - beginning in week 3 - students will be required to submit answers to the workshop questions via Turnitin on Wattle. Overall this component will count for 20% of your final grade (roughly 2.9% for each of the best 7/9 submissions).

  • The workshop questions will be released Tuesday afternoon of the proceeding week
  • answers will be due in Monday morning 10am of the following week (excepting weeks with a public holiday on the Monday in which case they will be due 10am Tuesday morning). For example, Tuesday of week 2 workshop questions will be released (based on material delivered in lectures during week 2), answers to these questions are due Monday 10am of week 3.
  • Your answers will receive a grade of 0 (not handed in); 1 (little effort/understanding); 2 (moderate effort/understanding); 3 (full effort with good understanding).
  • The workshop questions for week 1 are not assessable; neither are the workshop questions from the week of the mid semester exam (so with Problem Set 6 or Problem set 7).
  • The best 7/9 will count toward your final grade
  • Answers to the workshop questions will be discussed in that week's workshops and your contribution to the discussion will form your participation mark (see assessment task 4)

No late submissions will be accepted.

Assessment Task 2

On-line quizzes

Three (3) times during the semester there will be an on-line Wattle quiz testing knowledge covered in the preceding weeks' lectures, and/or workshops.

  • Each quiz will be worth 10 points and count for 5% to your final grade.
  • The quizzes will be available 2pm Thursday of weeks 4, 8 and 11 and are open for a period of 3.5 days - closing Monday 10am of the following week.
  • However, you will only have approximately 1 hour to complete the quiz;
  • You can only attempt the quiz once
  • You can not go backwards through the questions.
  • There will be instructions at the beginning of each quiz. Make sure you read them thoroughly before commencing.


If you miss a quiz for a legitimate reason, documentation will need to be provided to econ1101@anu.edu.au, and your remaining quizzes will be re-weighted.

Quiz answers will be provided upon closure of the quiz and detailed solutions and discussions provided online. No late submissions are accepted.

Assessment Task 3

Mid Semester Exam

A mid-semester exam will be held in week 6 or week 7 (as scheduled by Central Examinations). The exam is compulsory and will account for 20% of your final grade.

  • The exam will cover material from the preceding weeks (so weeks 1-5 if held in week 6 or material from weeks 1-6 if held in week 7)
  • it will be consist of short and long style answers (similar in style to the weekly Problem Set).
  • You will have 2.5 hours to complete the exam - this consists of 2hrs of writing time and 30mins of uploading time in which no writing is permitted.
  • The questions will be posted on Wattle as a PDF at the start of the exam time and you will need to upload hand written solutions to Wattle assignment at the due time.
  • The exam will be invigilated via zoom so you will need internet connection for the entirety of the exam and a camera focused on yourself and your writing space while doing the exam.
  • The exam will be a closed book exam.

Assessment Task 4

Value: 10 %
Learning Outcomes: 1,2,3,4,5,6

Participation

Your participation in workshop discussions each week will be assessable, counting for 10% of your final grade. There are 11 workshops throughout the smester, participation is expected in the majority of these sessions. Each week the tutor will mark your participation based on your level of engagement in the session and demonstrated understanding of the material discussed.

For example:

  • higher marks (8-10) will be awarded for consistent demonstration of engagement and demonstration of a high level of understanding of the majority of the material discussed each week;
  • 7 is awarded for somewhat consistent demonstration of engagement and demonstration of a reasonable level of understanding of the majority the material discussed each week;
  • 6 is awarded for somewhat consistent demonstration of engagement and demonstration of a reasonable level of understanding of the some of the material discussed each week;
  • 5 is awarded for somewhat inconsistent demonstration of engagement and demonstration of passable level of understanding of the material discussed each week;
  • less than 5 is awarded for inconsistent to little demonstration of engagement and rudimentary to little demonstration of understanding of the material discussed each week.

A partway mark will be provided to you in week 6.

Assessment Task 5

Value: 35 %

FInal Exam

A final exam will be held during the ANU exam block (as scheduled by Central Examinations). The exam is compulsory and will account for 35% of your final grade.

  • The exam will cover material from the entire course including lectures (live and pre-recorded modules) and workshops
  • it will be consist of short and long style answers (similar in style to the weekly Problem Set).
  • You will have 3.5 hours to complete the exam - this consists of 2.5hrs of writing time and 30mins of uploading time in which no writing is permitted.

Academic Integrity

Online Submission

You will be required to electronically sign a declaration as part of the submission of your assignment. Please keep a copy of the assignment for your records. Unless an exemption has been approved by the Associate Dean (Education) submission must be through Turnitin.

Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

No submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date will be permitted. If an assessment task is not submitted by the due date, a mark of 0 will be awarded.

Accepted academic practice for referencing sources that you use in presentations can be found via the links on the Wattle site, under the file named “ANU and College Policies, Program Information, Student Support Services and Assessment”. Alternatively, you can seek help through the Students Learning Development website.

Returning Assignments

All in-class quizzes will be returned in the week following the assessment being undertaken.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure. Extensions may be granted for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information.
In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service – including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy.
If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes.

Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
