In this course students will undertake advanced readings in Linguistics, in order to increase their critical understandings of identified works and how they are situated in the field. Students will continue their training in approaches to Linguistics and engage with pre-professional and professional scholars by attending, and reflecting in writing on, seminar papers presented in relevant seminars (typically in Linguistics or Language Teaching seminars or forums, in person or online).
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- review and evaluate the approaches used by Linguistics scholars to address the development of thinking in the discipline;
- review and evaluate the types of evidence used in Linguistics to support or refute hypotheses;
- demonstrate critical engagement with Linguistic arguments in a range of sub-areas; and
- demonstrate enhanced skills in synthesising and critiquing published works.

- Written critical reflections on 6 relevant seminars ( 6 unit course 500 words each total 3000 words; 12 unit course 1000 words each total 6000 words) (50) [LO 1,2]
- Written critical reflection on an area of Linguistics (6 unit course 2000 words; 12 unit course 4000 words) (50) [LO 1,2,3,4]

Workload
6-unit version of course: 130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 18 hours of attendance at weekly Seminars,
b) 112 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
12-unit version of course: 260 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 24-36 hours of contact with instructor over 12 weeks
b) 224-236 hours of independent student research, reading and writing (approximately 15-20 hours per week).
