Special topics aimed at developing the skills to understand and communicate contemporary mathematics and its applications. Topics vary from semester to semester and will be listed on the Maths Special Topics page by O-week. Please contact the course convener for more details.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Demonstrate the capacity for mathematical reasoning through analysing, proving, and explaining concepts from the mathematical sciences.
  2. Be able to critically read journal articles in the mathematical sciences.
  3. Accurately and efficiently use specific techniques from the mathematical sciences.
  4. Explain fundamental concepts of a special topic and its role in modern mathematics and its applications.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Assessment will be based on a student-customised set of assessment tasks relevant to the topic(s) being studied. An example of assessment structure is below. Weighting is negotiated in the first week of class. (100) [LO 1,2,3,4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

Approximately 130 hours (per 6 units of enrolment) of total student learning, which includes regular meetings, independent reading, writing, and research, and other tasks suitable for the topic(s) being studied.
