This course will provide you with supervised experience in one or more professional psychology settings, where you will undertake a range of client-related activities under the supervision of a registered psychologist.
This 12 unit course provides 260 of the 300 hours of practicum and skills training required by APAC in the 5th year of the 5+1 pathway to registration. The aim is to provide you with practical experience and prepare you to enter an external internship in the 6th year of the 5+1 pathway to registration.
In this course, you will apply your knowledge and skills in assessment and intervention and develop your ability to provide safe, high quality, person-centered care. You will also gain experience of professional practice/ clinic management and the practical application of ethical, legal and regulatory frameworks.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Demonstrate the ability to work under supervision in an evidence-based manner.
- Apply knowledge of relevant legal, ethical and administrative regulations and standards required by the profession and the workplace.
- Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour with supervisors.
- Demonstrate ability to collaborate effectively with other professionals and support staff.
- Demonstrate competencies in basic psychological assessment, formulation and intervention.

This course is assessed on a Course Requirement Satisfied (CRS) or Fail basis. Students must satisfactorily complete all assessment tasks in order to pass the course.
Students may also have to seek additional documentation prior to enrolling in the placement course depending on the external placement providers including:
- Immunisation and health screening
- ACT Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) Card
- An AFP National Police Check Certificate

Workload
PSYC8522 must be taken as a 12 unit course, with approximately 20-25 hours per week (260 throughout the semester).Inherent Requirements
During the clinical placement, students will provide psychology services to potentially vulnerable clients. This requires students to put into practice a range of professional competencies developed in earlier courses. Developing these competencies requires students to be able to:
- Communicate effectively in English, including understanding and conveying nuance and adapting their communication style to suit the preferences and needs of others.
- Use cues other than the literal meaning of spoken words to interpret the thoughts, emotions and motivations of others.
- Reflect on how their verbal and non-verbal communication is interpreted by others and use these insights to develop positive professional relationships.
- Monitor, reflect on and take responsibility for their own mental wellbeing, assumptions, beliefs and reactions to ensure they have the capacity to provide effective psychology services to clients.
- Work professionally with supervisors, colleagues and fellow students, take proactive steps to resolve difficult situations and learn effectively from supervisor feedback.
In addition, to participate in the placement, students must:
- Hold provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia, including meeting standards for criminal history and English language skills.
- Meet reasonable requirements set by the clinic at which they conduct their placement, including working at set times, suitability screening and, at some placements, requirements for immunisation.
Students must demonstrate their ability to meet these requirements before commencing the placement and will not be able to complete the placement if, for any reason, they are no longer able to meet them. Students who do not successfully complete the placement will not be able to complete their degree.
