In this course, through active engagement, students will be able to use an active vocabulary of about 2000 of the most frequently used words in Tetum. Students will build on the skills and knowledge learned in Tetum 1 and broaden their basic vocabulary and grammatical structures relevant to everyday conversations. Throughout the semester, students will engage in role-play conversations to learn how to use language appropriately in different social situations. They will further interact with authentic Tetum language and culture through various multi-media materials appropriate to the level. By the end of this course, students will be able to navigate a broader range of conversational situations using basic structures. They will be able to read non-technical authentic materials with the help of a dictionary.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Use an active vocabulary of about 2000 items.
2. Recognise and pronounce all Tetum vowels and consonants with appropriate intonation.
3. Communicate using basic sentences and phrases with correct grammar structures in broader range of situations in everyday life and further explore new topics such as accommodation, hospital, transport, accidents and animals and the diverse Timor-Leste history and culture.
4. Develop and demonstrate communication skills in short conversations, reading, writing, and translation.
5. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of the culture and everyday life of Timor-Leste, including topics such as interpersonal relationships, wellbeing, and work life.

Summarise in Tetum for next day discussion.
3	Week3: August 8 - August 12, 2022	Lisaun sanulu resin haat (Lesson 14) Transporte in Mai Aprende Tetum ho Ha'u Read simple sentences in Mai Aprende Tetum ho Ha’u in pairs. A short reading (provided by the teacher). Translation from Lisaun sanulu (Lesson 10) in Mai Ko'alia Tetun (provided by the teacher). Asking questions and answers in exercises 10.g, 10.h, 10.I (in pairs). FIRST TEST will be held on Wattle on Friday, 12 August, 2022. The test will examine your knowledge of vocabulary in Lessons 12-14 in Mai Aprende Tetum ho Ha’u, dialogues and all the simple sentences and readings.
4	Week 4: August 15 - August 19, 2022	Lisaun sanulu resin lima (Lesson 15). Ospital Oral presentation on this week’s topic 'Saude' Read all simple sentences in pairs. Grammar ‘to’o” (until, to arrive). A dialogue provided by the teacher. Atividade loroloron nian (daily activities). For next day discussion write in dot point format about health services in Australia.
5	Week 5: August 22 - August 26, 2022	Revision of lesson 15 for (15 minutes). Lisaun sanulu resin neen (Lesson 16). Animal no insetu (animals and insects) A presentation on this week’s topic - your favourite animal Read simple sentences in pairs. Talk about health and sickness. Grammar the verb ‘sente' (to feel). Translate and supply the missing words.
6	Week 6: August 29 - September 2, 2022	Revisions of lessons 12-16 (30 minutes) Write about your life in general. Write a dialogue to practise with your colleagues. Read the simple sentences in pairs. Translate and supply the missing words for homework. A dialogue – Haki'ak fahi no kuda (Raising pigs and horses). SECOND TEST will be held on Wattle on 2 September, 2022. The test will examine your knowledge of vocabulary, exercises and readings in Lessons 15-16 in Mai Aprende Tetum ho Ha’u and all the simple sentences, readings and dialogues. Last part of your test is a written test of 250 words.

9	Week 9: September 26 - September 30, 2022	Lisaun sanulu resin ualu (Lesson 18) Edukasaun (Education). Oral presentation on education or school. Verbal expressions and abstract nouns from verbs. Grammar ‘durante’ duration. Read simple sentences in pairs. Dialogue ‘Joni hasoru ho Fernando iha Dili (Joni meets Fernando in Dili). Reading: Write a summary in Tetum about a picture. Youtube link will be provided by the teacher
10	Week 10: October 3 - October 7, 2022	Lisaun sanulu resin sia (Lesson 19). Serbisu (work). The use of ‘sai’ to (become or to departure) and ‘nafatin (continue and still). New nouns, verbs and adjectives. A dialogue – Bere buka serbisu (Bere is looking for work). Translate Tetum sentences into English. Write a text of 250 words about employment. Oral presentation about looking for work. THIRD TEST will be held on Wattle on Friday, 7 October, 2022. The test will examine your knowledge of vocabulary, exercises and readings in Lessons 17-19 from Wattle. There will be a Tetum written test of 250 words.

12	Week 12: October 17 - October 21, 2022	Lisaun ruanulu resin ida (Lesson 21). Tranzitu ho asidente (traffic and accidents). Oral presentation about cars and traffic. New vocabulary and verbs. Interrogatives – what, who, how much, why, when. Read simple sentences in pairs. A dialogue: Polisia haree Alex halai sala dalan (A policeman saw Alex going the wrong way on his motorcycle.
13	Week 13: October 24 - October 28, 2022	Lisaun ruanulu resin rua (Lesson 22). Enkontru (meetings). A presentation about arranging meetings. A dialogue: Anita lori konvite ba fo Luisa iha uma for translation. FOURTH TEST will be held on Wattle on Friday, 28 October, 2022. The test will examine your knowledge of the vocabulary, exercises and readings in Lessons 20-22 from Wattle. FINAL ORAL TEST will be held by appointment on Tuesday, October 25, 2022.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website Students may choose not to submit assessment items through Turnitin. In this instance you will be required to submit, alongside the assessment item itself, hard copies of all references included in the assessment item.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Assessment Task 1

Participation 10%

Participation is not equal to 'attendance'.

Participation is assessed throughout the semester based on individual student's engagement and performance in class.

Students are required to actively participate in the activities and their in-class performance should reflect the progress they have made by completing these tasks.

Assessment Task 2

Weekly Homework 10%

There are weekly homework to do. The weekly homework worth 10% of your final result.

Assessment Task 3

Oral Presentation (5 minutes) 10%

You will choose a topic from the weekly lessons for your presentation. You need to be ready to answer questions from your colleagues and tutor. This presentation is worth 10% of your final marks. Oral presentation is scheduled from 05 of September 2022 - 21 of October 2022. Once you decide to do your presentation the marks will be available a week after your presentation.

Assessment Task 4

The four tests are worth 5% each or a total of 20% of your final assessment.

The questions in these tests are drawn from the lessons, exercises and vocabulary in the text. 'Mai Aprende Tetum ho Ha'u and the Peace Corps books.

To do well in a written test you need to have completed all the exercises in the lessons concerned, and you need to have a good command of the vocabulary presented for study.

FIRST TEST will be held on Wattle on Friday, 12 August 2022. The test will examine your knowledge of vocabulary in Lessons 12-14 in Mai Aprende Tetum ho Ha’u, dialogues and all the simple sentences and readings. Test result will be available on Wattle Friday, 26 August 2022.

SECOND TEST will be held on Wattle on 2 September 2022. The test will examine your knowledge of vocabulary, exercises and readings in Lessons 15-16 in Mai Aprende Tetum ho Ha’u and all the simple sentences, readings and dialogues. Last part of your test is a Tetum written test of 250 words. Test result will be available on Wattle Friday, 16 September 2022.

THIRD TEST will be held on Wattle on Friday, 7 October 2022. The test will examine your knowledge of vocabulary, exercises and readings in Lessons 17-19 from Wattle. There will be a Tetum written test of 250 words. Results of this test will be available on Wattle Friday 14 October 2022.

FOURTH TEST will be held on Wattle on Friday, 28 October 2022. The test will examine your knowledge of the vocabulary, exercises and readings in Lessons 20-22 from Wattle. Results of the test will be available on Wattle Friday 11 November 2022. All the Tests RESULTS will be on Wattle within a week after completion.

Assessment Task 5

Mid Semester Oral Test 20% - 10% is awarded for your oral test and another 10% is awarded for translation assignment.

Your oral test will be held on Tuesday 30 August 2022. The results of this examination should be on Wattle on the Friday, 16 of September 2022.Mid semester oral test 20%

The oral examinations will last for about 8 to 10 minutes. For your oral examinations it is very important that you have the fluency, show initiative, creativity and capacity to keep it fluid when conversing or doing the dialogue in pairs. This means you will have to practice intensively outside the classroom prior to each oral examination. Your mid semester oral test is worth 10%.

A Tetum translation assignment will be posted on Wattle, Friday 2 of September 2022 to do during the semester break and be submitted in through Wattle at the latest on Friday 16 of September 2022. Dictionaries may be used. Results of your translation will be available on Wattle on Friday 23 September 2022.

Assessment Task 6

The Final Oral Test 30%

Final oral test will be held by appointment on Tuesday 25 October, 2022. Pick your topic for this exam. The results of this examination should be on Wattle on 11 of November 2022.

Online Submission

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

No submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date will be permitted. If an assessment task is not submitted by the due date, a mark of 0 will be awarded.

Referencing Requirements

Accepted academic practice for referencing sources that you use in presentations can be found via the links on the Wattle site, under the file named “ANU and College Policies, Program Information, Student Support Services and Assessment”. Alternatively, you can seek help through the Students Learning Development website.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information. In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service — including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy. If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
