Program Requirements

This Honours plan requires the completion of 48 units, which must consist of:

24 units from completion of the following compulsory course:

ACST4500 Actuarial Honours Thesis

18 units from completion of the following compulsory courses:

ACST4031 Actuarial Control Cycle 1

ACST4032 Actuarial Control Cycle 2

ACST4062 Actuarial Data Analysis

6 units from completion of courses from the following list:

FINM4106 Advanced Investments

STAT4018 Stochastic Modelling

            STAT4026 Graphical Data Analysis

            STAT4027 Statistical Inference

            STAT4029 Design of Experiments and Surveys

            STAT4102 Applied Time Series Analysis

STAT4116 Introduction to Bayesian Data Analysis


To complete the degree, students will also be required to complete the research training activities specified by the convenor of the program.


Honours calculation

 The final Honours Exit Level is the sum of all achieved course weightings. The course weighting is calculated for each individual course using the below formula:

                              (unit value of course/total units for degree) x final numerical grade of the course 

 

Elective Study

Once you have met the program requirements of your degree, you may have enough electives to complete an additional elective majorminor or specialisation.

Admission Requirements

At a minimum, all applicants must meet program-specific academic/non-academic requirements, and English language requirements. Admission to ANU is on a competitive basis as the number of places available in a program is limited. Admission to Honours is also subject to supervisory capacity and approval from the relevant Delegated Authority within the Academic College.

 

Applicants must present:

  • An AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Actuarial Studies degree or equivalent, completed within the last two years with a weighted average mark equivalent to an ANU 75 per cent calculated from 36 units (i.e. 0.75 EFTSL) equivalent to the following ANU courses:

STAT3032 Survival Models

STAT3037 Life Contingencies

STAT3038 Actuarial Techniques

STAT3035 Risk Theory OR STAT3057 Risk Modelling 1

STAT3036 Credibility Theory OR STAT3058 Risk Modelling 2

The annual indicative fee provides an estimate of the program tuition fees for international students and domestic students (where applicable). The annual indicative fee for a program is based on the standard full-time enrolment load of 48 units per year (unless the program duration is less than 48 units). Fees for courses vary by discipline meaning that the fees for a program can vary depending on the courses selected. Honours in Actuarial Studies is a program offered within the Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Applied Statistics that offers students who have excelled in their undergraduate actuarial degree a challenging but rewarding year of study. We seek outstanding students who are keen to undertake independent research with the guidance from academic staff. Sufficiently high grades in the coursework component of the honours year will enable students to receive exemptions from some of the Associateship and Fellowship requirements of the Actuaries Institute.

Further Information

Application deadline:

The Bachelor of Actuarial Studies (Honours) will be commencing in Semester 1 (February) only each year. Applications for Semester 2 (July) will not be accepted.


The deadline for S1 is 30th November (11:55pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time).

 

Notification of outcome: Applicants will be notified of the outcome for admission by 15th January


Acceptance deadline:

If applicants are successful in receiving an offer, the acceptance deadline is 31st January.


Application materials

Applicants must provide complete documentation, including a certified or coloured copy of testamur and final transcript (except for ANU students). Applicants must also provide a Statement of Purpose, which must include:

1.     Reasons for applying to the honours program, including discussion of the specific skills they would like to develop during the honours year.

2.     Proposed research topic for the honours year or discussion of specific research interests that the applicant would like to pursue during honours. It is highly desirable that the applicant has an agreed supervisor at the time of applying

3.     How completion of the honours program will help the applicant in their future career.


All of the documents are required by 10th December.
