In this course, students critically evaluate and analyse central issues in contemporary Indonesia and its role in the ‘Malay World’ - the Malay-speaking parts of Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. The unifying focus of the course is on the 'everyday life' of people in the region, with specific references to culture, media, anthropology, and the environment. Students will further explore the dynamics of social relations in specific cultural and historical contexts of the Indonesian and Malay archipelago, and current issues in the light of recent technological and societal change. Topics covered include popular culture, gender and religious identity, urbanisation, digitalisation, migration, climate change, decentralisation, cosmopolitanism, historical memories and much more. Students learn not only about the facts and figures of nation-states in the region today, but also 'how' their modern identity is being debated and constructed, and how it has changed over time. Throughout the course, students will have opportunities to formulate their own views and arguments. In this way, they will expand their understanding of contemporary social and cultural life in Indonesia and the Malay world.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Identify and explain central issues involving culture, media and everyday life in Indonesia and the Malay World;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the historical, cultural and social contexts of the developments of these issues;
- Critically evaluate, compare and discuss arguments made in the field of cultural studies and Southeast Asian studies;
- Apply analytical skills to develop a deeper understanding of the dynamics of social relations in the region;
- Formulate their own views and arguments on the topics of the course, both orally and in writing.

Whether you are on campus or studying remotely, there are a variety of online platforms you will use to participate in your study program. These could include videos for lectures and other instruction, two-way video conferencing for interactive learning, email and other messaging tools for communication, interactive web apps for formative and collaborative activities, print and/or photo/scan for handwritten work and drawings, and home-based assessment.

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the Academic Skills website. In rare cases where online submission using Turnitin software is not technically possible; or where not using Turnitin software has been justified by the Course Convener and approved by the Associate Dean (Education) on the basis of the teaching model being employed; students shall submit assessment online via ‘Wattle’ outside of Turnitin, or failing that in hard copy, or through a combination of submission methods as approved by the Associate Dean (Education). The submission method is detailed below.
Moderation of Assessment
Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

The seminar classes are discussion-based, and ideas are shared and gained through peer-to-peer dialogues. Students are expected to participate actively and responsibly in class discussions.

Book or Film Review
Students will select a book (fiction/non-fiction) or a film about Indonesia and/or the Malay World to review. The 800-word review is due after mid-semester break, with the idea that you can enjoy a book/film or two during the break. Recommended titles and some exemplars will be provided, and we will set aside some time in class to discuss how to write a review.

Students will select a week for a 20-minute tutorial presentation. The presentation should include summary and review of the readings and at least three key questions (can include sub-questions) for class discussion.

After each class, the instructor will create discussion questions and keywords which are drawn from our in-class discussion/debates on weekly topics. Students will write a total of ten short informal reflection posts of 150-200 words each, responding to the questions and/or peers' posts from Week 2 to Week 11. Each post is due Tuesday 5pm.

In this assessment, students will get to choose not just the research topic but the medium in which they can best present their ideas. They can choose to work on either option from below. **Note that the instructor does not favour any particular medium and you should choose what is best for your learning**
(1) Write a research essay of 2500 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography) in which students review current literature on the topic, formulate their own arguments and critically analyse the chosen topic. An essay will be evaluated on the quality of its research component, analysis, structure and format & writing style.
(2) Create an 'Unessay' - a project of any format besides a traditional final paper. It can be an infographic, podcast episode, fictional piece, content video, Wikipedia entry, artwork, meme collage (whatever you want!), followed by a 500-word statement that explains how you went about producing the unessay. An unessay will be evaluated on the quality of its research component, interpretation, communication and creativity.
The essay/unessay is worth 30% of the final grade and is due on 16 Jun, 5pm. In addition to it, students need to bring a 500-word proposal by the last class (Week 12) and exchange it with peers for feedback and discussion. The proposal is worth 10% of the final grade and it should include (for essay): proposed title, research questions, literature review and plan; (for unessay): proposed title, research questions, medium chosen (and why) and plan. Students are encouraged to book an appointment with the instructor after the last class to discuss their proposal further (not compulsory), and they can choose to resubmit (or not) their proposal in Week 13.

The academic integrity principle commits all students to engage in academic work in ways that are consistent with, and actively support, academic integrity, and to uphold this commitment by behaving honestly, responsibly and ethically, and with respect and fairness, in scholarly practice.
The University expects all staff and students to be familiar with the academic integrity principle, the Academic Integrity Rule 2021, the Policy: Student Academic Integrity and Procedure: Student Academic Integrity, and to uphold high standards of academic integrity to ensure the quality and value of our qualifications.
The Academic Integrity Rule 2021 is a legal document that the University uses to promote academic integrity, and manage breaches of the academic integrity principle. The Policy and Procedure support the Rule by outlining overarching principles, responsibilities and processes. The Academic Integrity Rule 2021 commences on 1 December 2021 and applies to courses commencing on or after that date, as well as to research conduct occurring on or after that date. Prior to this, the Academic Misconduct Rule 2015 applies.
The University commits to assisting all students to understand how to engage in academic work in ways that are consistent with, and actively support academic integrity. All coursework students must complete the online Academic Integrity Module (Epigeum), and Higher Degree Research (HDR) students are required to complete research integrity training. The Academic Integrity website provides information about services available to assist students with their assignments, examinations and other learning activities, as well as understanding and upholding academic integrity.
You will be required to electronically sign a declaration as part of the submission of your assignment. Please keep a copy of the assignment for your records. Unless an exemption has been approved by the Associate Dean (Education) submission must be through Turnitin.
For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.
Individual assessment tasks may or may not allow for late submission. Policy regarding late submission is detailed below:
- Late submission permitted. Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension are penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.

Extensions and Penalties
Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure. Extensions may be granted for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.
Distribution of grades policy
Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes.
Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
