Work integrated learning is the core component of the Special Industry Project course. The course provides a select group of undergraduate students across the university with the opportunity to work in a small cross-disciplinary team setting and solve a business problem presented by a live business client. The academic component of the course is comprised of a series of master classes delivered by academic experts and industry professionals. Under the supervision of the course convenor and support of a designated industry mentor, students will apply their theoretical knowledge into practice by working on innovative solutions that address the specified business issue from the live business client that is located in Australia or overseas. The Special Industry Project course facilitates undergraduate students’ development of professional skills important for their job market readiness.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Apply relevant theoretical knowledge and skills to solve a specified business problem; 
  2. Research, analyse, evaluate and propose practical solutions to the business problem encountered by the client organisation;
  3. Work effectively and professionally within a team to develop practical solutions to a specified business problem;
  4. Communicate effectively with peers and business professionals;
  5. Construct a professional industry report; and
  6. Critically reflect upon the value of lifelong learning processes provided through the project experience.

Permission codes to enrol in the course will only be issued to students following a successful competitive application process.


All prospective students must contact the Student Services team in their respective College for written evidence that they have sufficient space in their program/s of study for this elective. Upon receiving the written confirmation from the Student Services team from their College, the students may then apply to enrol in CBEA3001. Calls for application are made approximately 3 months before the commencement of each Semester.

Indicative Assessment

  1. May include: Mid-term progress report, Mid-term presentation, Project presentation, Final project report, Peer evaluation and Individual reflection. (100) [LO null]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

Student are expected to commit up to 130 hours towards the completion of this course, across the following activities:

  • Project orientation
  • 2 networking events
  • Master classes: 5 relevant topics identified by the course convenor in consultation with the live business client and the student teams
  • Regular meetings with industry mentor
  • Project commitment
  • Individual assessment of project team and individual reflection on project experience

Requisite and Incompatibility

To be eligible for the Special Industry Project course, students must be a current undergraduate student enrolled in an ANU academic program (including single or double degrees). The student must have completed a minimum 72 units of their undergraduate studies. Students must not undertake CBEA3001 and CBEA3070/ ANIP3003/ ANIP3005/ ANIP3007/ VCUG3200 concurrently. Students will be selected to enrol in the course following a competitive application process.
