This course is divided into two parts, both parts building on CHEM6213 Materials Chemistry. The foundations in Solid State Chemistry are expanded to cover topics in structural characterisation, local crystal chemistry and properties of selected functional inorganic materials. The Physical Chemistry part includes an introduction to statistical thermodynamics which is an essential tool for advanced research in physical chemistry including biophysics and surface chemistry. The lecture material on colloid and surface chemistry is more applied with a focus on industrial examples.


This course is co-taught with undergraduate students but assessed separately.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Critically analyse how intermolecular forces determine colloidal behaviour, surfactant and surface phenomena.
  2. Demonstrate advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge, i.e., the application of statistical thermodynamics to describe the behaviour of gases, simple liquids, as well as phase (gas-liquid) equilibrium and liquid mixtures.
  3. Analyse critically complex information, concepts and theories of the relationship between structure, local crystal chemistry and function in the solid state.
  4. Implement the complex concepts and theories developed in the course lectures in the practical component.
  5. Work to an expert professional level in a chemical laboratory, demonstrating effective laboratory safety and etiquette, particularly in usage chemicals and lab-based glassware and equipment.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the semester including:

  • Face-to face components which may consist of 3 x 1 hour lectures per week plus 27 hours of laboratory throughout the semester.
  • Approximately 67 hours of self-study which will include preparation for lectures, presentations and other assessment tasks.

To enrol in this course you must be active in the Master of Science in Material Science or the Master of Science (Advanced) in Materials Science. Incompatible with CHEM3202.
