In 2023, this course is on campus with remote adjustments only for participants with unavoidable travel restrictions/visa delays.

This course is one of several research and development project courses that form part of the BE (R&D) Program. These individual project courses of varying length are offered at different stages of the degree program, adding up to a total of 30 units of project courses. ENGN2707 is a 6-unit individual research project course, in which students undertake a substantial research project with an experienced supervisor, typically in the second year of their program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Identify and describe an engineering-related research project, and the resources required to execute it successfully.
  2. Analyse, interpret and document research results, including some assessment of assumptions and limitations, and compare with existing work and literature.
  3. Draw sound conclusions through the application of relevant underlying theory, concepts and methodologies.
  4. Communicate research outcomes in oral, visual and written forms to colleagues, other engineering professionals and the broader community.
  5. Reflect on the outcomes and execution of a research project to enable continuous improvement of research skills.
  6. Work effectively, professionally and ethically as part of a research team led by a project supervisor.

Work Integrated Learning

This course will contributes towards developing competencies expected to work in R&D roles in industry, government, and academia, or as an accredited engineer.

In this course, you will undertake a substantial research project with an experienced supervisor.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Mid-term Report (10) [LO 1,2,4,5,6]
  2. Project Seminar (20) [LO 1,2,4,6]
  3. Project Report (70) [LO 1,2,3,4,5,6]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

An individual research project of variable duration, requiring approximately 120 hours total time commitment per 6 units. The project depth and scope should take into account a student’s background and prior studies. Students are encouraged to meet with their supervisor on a regular basis, usually at least once a week.
