This course allows students to develop a relevant research project in the areas of Public Humanities, cultural studies, and/or Digital Humanities. Students are expected to take part in a regular research seminar group with academics and fellow postgraduate students that will help to guide them in the development of a research topic, discuss appropriate methodologies and practices, and work on their project throughout the semester. This course allows students to develop a project that may have direct industry or professional relevance; and to further develop their project management, writing and/or digital literacy skills. Students will be encouraged to explore projects that are interdisciplinary and employ new media and digital skills and components.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- design a small-scale original research project;
- identify and discuss relevant literature, including theoretical and methodological approaches to the chosen topic;
- apply relevant research methods and theories to the analysis of the research questions/hypothesis; and
- develop and demonstrate relevant digital, creative writing, or new media skills.

Placements
This course includes an independent research module, which gives students the freedom and flexibility to pursue a topic of their choice within the vast fields of Digital Humanities and Public Culture. Students are tasked with creating a research plan (including a data management plan, a timeline, suggested research outputs, etc), a literature review, and a final project report. Students also have the opportunity to create new datasets, and complete the process of acquiring Ethics clearance. To date, several students have published their findings and projects completed in these courses.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
A total of 130 hours over the semester/session, including a minimum of 1 hour per week of online discussions and meetings with the research seminar cohort.

a) 12-24 hours of contact over 12 weeks of weekly seminars
b) 106-118 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Students need to be willing to develop a research question and propose a basic plan for their independent research. Ideally students will have some background (prior study or work experience) relevant to the area of research.
